Oklahoma high school football gets major shake-up with new classifications, districts
Aug. 10—In a groundbreaking move, the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) has unveiled the latest football classifications and districts for the upcoming 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.
The decision was made during the OSSAA Board of Directors' regular monthly meeting, with one exception for Class 6A-I districts, which are set for approval in September.
The most significant change is the addition of three new classifications, bringing the total number of football classes to 12. Similar to Class 6A's split into 6A-I and 6A-II, Classes 2A, A and B will also be divided in half.
This move aims to create a more balanced and competitive playing field across the state.
Several local schools are set to experience shifts in their districts and classifications. Notable changes include: — Claremore, remaining in Class 5A's District 4, will welcome back Tahlequah, Booker T. Washington and Tulsa Memorial. However, Bishop Kelley, Edison and Nathan Hale will be departing for new districts. — In Class 4A, Oologah and Catoosa will stay in District 3 but will now face off against newcomers Lincoln Christian and Fort Gibson as Cushing and Cleveland make their exit. — Verdigris will remain in District 4 of Class 3A, but the district will see the addition of Sequoyah, a Rogers County rival moving up from Class 2A. Berryhill and Cleveland will also join this district, while Cascia Hall, Holland Hall, Tulsa Central and Inola are leaving. — Inola will become a part of the newly formed Class 2A-I, moving down from Class 3A. The school will compete with teams like Beggs, Chandler, Henryetta, Prague, Sequoyah Tahlequah, Sperry and Westville in District 3. — Chelsea will transition to Class 2A-II from Class A and be joined by teams like Salina, Adair, Caney Valley, Colcord, Commerce, Kansas and Rejoice Christian in District 3. — Foyil will remain in Class B but will now be part of Class B-I, competing in District 3 alongside Barnsdall, Dewar, Garber, Porum and Yale.
