Oklahoma Baseball wins fourth straight Big 12 series with 17-7 win over WVU
The hits, and runs, just kept on coming for the Oklahoma Sooners today as they defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 17-7 in the series finale to take their fourth straight Big 12 series.
OU collected 15 hits and scored three or more runs in three innings. Oklahoma’s offense has had West Virginia’s number this whole series, scoring eight or more runs in all three games this weekend.
Cade Horton got the start on the mound and only lasted three innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and a walk.
Horton allowed five runs in just three innings of work. He was pulled early in the fourth after the Mountaineers loaded the bases. All three runners would make their way around the bases and Horton was charged with all three runs.
Ben Abram didn’t fare much better in his relief appearance. He didn’t record an out, allowing two hits and a run. Trevin Michael would slow the bleeding, pitching four innings and holding the Mountaineers to one run to pick up the win.
But it was the offense that was the story of the day as the Sooners erupted for their 17 runs. They had four players collect multiple hits and three batters with multiple RBIs according to Josh Callaway of Sooners SI. Brett Squires was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a walk. The bottom three hitters in the Sooners’ order of Squires, Diego Muniz, and Kendall Pettis went 9 for 10 with nine runs scored, six RBI’s, and three walks. Tanner Tredaway also recorded two hits and three RBIs.
Since dropping a 10-1 loss against Dallas Baptist, the Sooners’ offense has been on an absolute tear. In the six games played since the loss, OU has scored at least five runs and has scored ten or more in three of those. If this offense could get more consistent pitching, the Sooners could be a very good baseball team.
The Sooners will travel North to play the Wichita State Shockers on Monday for one game and will then to Lubbock for the final series of the regular season to play the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Thursday.
OU is currently fourth in the Big 12 standings and only one game behind the Red Raiders for third.
Oklahoma’s offense is good enough for them to make some noise in the Big 12 tournament and they looked destined for an NCAA tournament berth as well. Pitching will determine how far this team can go.
