Oklahoma baseball’s Chazz Martinez earned player of the week honors after impressive outing

The 2022 season has gotten off to a nice start for the 5-2 Oklahoma Sooners. They picked up wins over Auburn, Michigan, and Wichita State before a weekend series win over Northwestern State.

In the deciding game Sunday night, Chazz Martinez was the difference in the Sooners 5-1 win. He threw seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits, and one walk while striking out 14 for the first win of his Oklahoma career.

For his efforts, Martinez was named the Big 12 player of the week and Collegiate Baseball’s National player of the week.

According to SoonerSports.com, Martinez’s 14 strikeouts were the most since 2019. On the season, Martinez has thrown 11.2 innings and is allowing opposing batters to hit .171. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in through his first two appearances, first going 4.2 innings in Oklahoma’s win over Michigan.

The Oklahoma Sooners next travel to Houston for a weekend series against LSU, UCLA, and Tennessee in the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children College Classic. Oklahoma will return home March 8 to take on Dallas Baptist University in their home opener.
