Ohio State vs. Indiana is in 20 days. How did OSU do in its season opener 20 years ago?

Ohio State is less than three weeks away from beginning a new season.

In 20 days, the Buckeyes will take the field at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington for a Big Ten matchup against Indiana: Ohio State's second Big Ten opener in three years after facing Minnesota to begin 2021.

Ohio State has not lost a season-opening game since 1999. Since then, the Buckeyes have won 23 consecutive season openers.

With 20 days before the Buckeyes take on the Hoosiers, here's a look at what happened in Ohio State's season-opening game 20 years ago.

Ohio State opened 2003 season with ranked win vs. No. 17 Washington

Coming off a national championship win against Miami to end the 2002 season, Ohio State started the 2003 season in the national spotlight.

The No. 2 Buckeyes began the season with a home matchup against No. 17 Washington: Ohio State's first ranked season opener since losing to No. 12 Miami to begin the 1999 campaign.

But Ohio State settled in quickly against the Huskies, beating No. 17 Washington 28-9. The Buckeyes scored 21 unanswered points in the first half with two rushing touchdowns by quarterback Craig Krenzel and a rushing score by running back Maurice Hall.

Lydell Ross also scored a 15-yard touchdown for the Buckeyes in the third quarter.

The Buckeyes' defense limited Washington to 7 rushing yards on 24 carries, scoring one touchdown with 3:27 left in the game.

While Ohio State recorded 345 yards of offense, no offensive skill player recorded more than 80 yards from scrimmage.

Ohio State's win against Washington was the first of five ranked wins in 2003. However, the Buckeyes' losses at No. 23 Wisconsin and at No. 5 Michigan secured a Fiesta Bowl placement, beating No. 8 Kansas State 35-28.

Ohio State has faced Washington 12 times in college football history. The Buckeyes have beaten the Huskies nine times, and have not lost against Washington since 1994.

Washington will join the Big Ten in 2024 along with Oregon, Southern California and UCLA.
