Ohio high school football: Who won in Week 5? Scores, quick hits from Columbus-area games

We have reached the midway point of the high school football regular season, and we kicked off our live Week 5 coverage a day early. Frank DiRenna and photographer Adam Cairns were at Columbus Academy on Thursday night to cover the Vikings against St. Charles in a battle of unbeatens.

On Friday, DiRenna and photographer Graham Stokes covered another matchup of 4-0 teams: Delaware Hayes at Westerville North. Dave Purpura and photographer Clare Grant were at DeSales, where the Stallions faced Ready for the first time since 1986. Speaking of Ready, Purpura recently wrote about Silver Knights star running back Kentrell Rinehart.

Also on Friday, Cairns sent in photos from the City League-South showdown between Briggs and Africentric.

Friday quick hits

Ready 43, DeSales 42 (OT)

  • The programs’ first meeting since 1986 was bound to be worth the wait for someone, but few could have seen how wild this game would become. DeSales (2-3) bolted to a 21-0 first-half lead on the strength of three turnovers, only to watch visiting Ready (4-1) pull into a tie on three touchdowns in an 85-second span late in the half. Kentrell Rinehart, who came in with more than 1,000 yards rushing, threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Miller on a trick play to spark the comeback and scored twice in quick succession to make it 21-all. His 1-yard run in overtime made it 42-41, and the Silver Knights said there was little doubt they would go for a two-point conversion and the win. “Everybody wanted to go out and get (the win) and that’s exactly what we did,” said Rinehart, who ran in for the winning points. “This was a character win for our whole team. We knew we had to show up and show out.”

  • Much as his role as primary back came about due to teammate Anthony Campbell’s injury, so did Rinehart’s role as the passer on the trick play that helped turn the game around. Rinehart took a backward pass from Jacob Cheatham, threw down his own sideline as he was falling out of bounds and connected with an open Miller, who waltzed into the end zone. “I saw them signaling the play. … We don’t run too many trick plays and we hadn’t run this one this season,” Miller said. “They put me in the backfield. (Rinehart) trusted me, threw it deep and I made a play.”

  • Ready got within 28-27 on Jordan Mullens’ 47-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the third, then tied it with 3:23 to go in regulation on a 4-yard touchdown run from Joaquin Patterson and the ensuing two-point conversion.

  • The loss overshadowed what at times was a strong defensive effort for the Stallions, who benefited from turnovers to build their early lead. In addition to a Rinehart fumble, Elijah Charles returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown and Elazar Hood twice picked off Cheatham. DeSales allowed only 8 yards on Ready’s first three possessions, by which time the Stallions led 14-0, but committed 17 penalties for the game.

  • After gaining only 7 yards on five carries in the first half, senior running back Avery Garlock shouldered much of the offensive load for DeSales after halftime. He had 19 carries for 160 yards in the second half, including a 30-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter that made it 35-27. R.J. Day threw three touchdown passes, two to Mike Walker — including a 20-yarder on the first play of overtime — and another to P.J. Noles and ran for a score. The loss was only DeSales’ sixth in 26 meetings with Ready in a series that dates to 1962.

Ready celebrates its 43-42 overtime win at DeSales on Friday.

Westerville North 14, Delaware Hayes 7

  • North (5-0, 2-0 OCC-Capital) won the battle of unbeatens, holding off Delaware at home. Delaware (4-1, 1-1) scored on its first possession. After that, an aggressive North defense set the tone. “We have some players,” North coach Stanley Jackson Sr. said. “We have a defense that is tough. We have a coaching staff that is outstanding. The adjustments they make on the fly, you see it. ... Delaware is a good football team offensively.”

  • Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, North quarterback Ronald Jackson scored on an 18-yard run to tie the game with 1:30 left in the half. North broke the tie on its first possession of the second half as Jackson connected with Brian Robinson for a 5-yard touchdown with 8:15 left in the third quarter. Jackson rushed for 81 yards and passed for 78. “Defense led us through this game,” Ronald Jackson said. “They picked us up. We’ve had some games where the offense has led us. The defense has carried us these past two games. We love them for that. We have some stuff to clean up on offense.”

  • Delaware's first possession went 99 yards, and Josh Russell capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 42 seconds left in the first quarter. The Warriors contained the Pacers the rest of way as they applied constant pressure to quarterback Jake Lowman, who completed 17 of 31 passes for 153 yards with one interception. The Pacers were limited to 190 total yards. “We knew they were going to be fast and aggressive up front,” Delaware coach Ryan Montgomery said. “We have to do a better job of communicating. We let a few inside pressures get going. They have great edge guys. They get after the quarterback. We had a great first drive. We just have to sustain that.”

  • Delaware moved into North territory twice in the fourth quarter but couldn’t convert. “We just didn’t execute,” Montgomery said. “We had one there and (the pass) came up just a little bit long in the end zone. We have guys. We sustained some drives. We just had some self-inflicted wounds that we have to clean up.”

  • North was penalized 10 times for 77 yards, with eight coming in the first quarter. “What it shows is the team is resilient and it can fight through adversity, but we have to be better,” coach Jackson said. “Eventually, that’s going to run out. We have to figure out how to clean this up.”

Thursday quick hits

Columbus Academy 23, St. Charles 16

  • After spotting St. Charles an early 14-0 lead, Academy turned to its defense and ground attack to rally past the visiting Cardinals in a battle of unbeatens. The Vikings (5-0) kept St. Charles (4-1) out of the end zone the rest of the way, with the Cardinals’ other points coming on a safety in the third quarter. Greyson Thomas rushed for 137 yards on 16 carries to lead the Academy offense. “We have a lot of underclassmen who are rising to the challenge and raising their level of play,” Thomas said.

  • Academy is off to its best start since 2003, when it opened with four consecutive wins and went on to capture the Division V state title. “I’m not surprised,” Thomas said. “I felt like we had it within us. I was confident in our ability. I just wanted to make sure that we came out and played the way that I know that we’re capable of playing and we did eventually, so I’m happy about that and I’m proud of my team.” St. Charles was off to its first 4-0 start since 2010, when it went on to finish 5-5. Academy is in Division V, Region 19 this season, while St. Charles is in Division II, Region 7.

  • The Vikings tied the game at 14 by halftime on Mikey Jauchius’ 36-yard touchdown run and Thomas’ 10-yard scoring run. Jack Yeoman’s 12-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter gave Academy the lead for good at 20-14. Abe Ulbrich added a 23-yard field goal in the closing seconds. “I give our kids a ton of credit for the way they fought and fought,” Academy coach Robin Miller said. “That’s the heart and character of our guys. (They have) unbelievable talent and character. ... It’s an unbelievable win for our program. St. Charles is going to win a lot of games.”

  • Fourth-quarter interceptions by Parker Stoner and Nick Yakam helped Academy shut out St. Charles in the second half. “Our defense has been outrageous,” Miller said. “The way they keep playing when we really needed it, we saw that tonight.”

  • Ryan Mooney led St. Charles offensively, completing 19 of 35 passes for 147 yards and running for a 5-yard touchdown in the first quarter to make it 14-0. The Cardinals opened the scoring on Pervonne Vera’s 43-yard interception return on the Vikings’ first possession of the game. “We knew it was going to be a tight game,” St. Charles coach Deke Hocker said. “They have a good team. They made more plays down the stretch than we did. We had too many errors. You can’t do that against good teams.”
