Obsession's Charlie Murphy opens up about filming Anna's sex scenes
Forget Sex/Life and 50 Shades of Grey, Obsession just dropped on Netflix and everyone is talking about it.
The four-part series follows William, a successful surgeon who begins a secretive affair with his son’s fiancée, Anna, and it is steamy, to say the least.
Now, Charlie Murphy, who plays Anna, has opened about the series’ sex scenes and what it was like to work with Richard Armitage and an intimacy coordinator.
Speaking to The Independent, Charlie revealed that her and Richard, who plays William, pretty much kept their distance from each other after first meeting at their chemistry read.
“He fed me a few olives and then we shook hands and said goodbye,” she joked, adding that they did this to maintain a similar relationship to their characters who don’t know all that much about each other apart from really fancying the other.
Then, after spending a week filming the more intimate scenes, she said “it was a nice parallel” as they had “experienced [their] world already” when they went on to film the public scenes, which were still packed with loads of sexual tension.
On working with intimacy coordinator Adelaide Waldrop, Charlie said it made her feel more comfortable. “It has given me more bravery to know that I have an armour on in some way, even if I’m fully nude,” she shared.
On what it was like to work on Obsession, Adelaide told Cosmopolitan UK that because “sexual storytelling was so essential” to the story, she had a whole folder of research into everything from bondage knots to power play.
“It was really important to me that we authentically represented these characters' stories, as well the communities that they were engaging with,” she shared.
“There was a bedrock foundation of trust and safety, and I was confident in the way that both actors communicated with each other,” she continued. “We're checking everything - every grab and every squeeze [to ensure the actors are comfortable] - which means they have the freedom to explore and really push the boundaries of the characters, because everyone knows that Richard and Charlie are safe.”
