Notre Dame baseball NCAA tournament history

Notre Dame isn’t known for being a baseball school but their success in the sport may surprise some as the Irish has qualified for the NCAA tournament 23 times after the successful 2021 season saw the Irish record the best record in the ACC and end up hosting their own tournament regional.

The Irish ultimately ended 2021 one win shy of the College World Series but here is how they have done all-time in their 23 trips to the NCAA baseball tournament:

1949

In 1949 Notre Dame qualified for their first NCAA baseball tournament but made a quick exit after going 0-2 in Region B.

1956

The Irish made their second appearance in baseball’s “big dance” and won a game but were still eliminated quickly in District 4 after going 1-2.

1958

Notre Dame didn’t make it back to Omaha this year, or for another 45 seasons for that fact, but did go 2-2 in District 4 play.

1959

Notre Dame again made some noise in District 4 but was ultimately eliminated after again compiling a 2-2 tournament record.

1960

The Irish, playing in their fifth straight NCAA tournament, were the first team eliminated from District 4 play in 1960 as they lost their only two games in the tournament.

1963

Notre Dame missed the tournament in both 1961 and 1962 before returning to the dance in 1963 where they went 1-2 in District 4 play.

1970

The 1970 Notre Dame baseball team ended a drought of six years by returning to the NCAA tournament but was quickly eliminated after going just 1-2 in District 4 play.

This would be Notre Dame’s last trip to the NCAA tournament for nearly two decades.

1989

After failing to qualify for the NCAA tournament each year from 1971-1988, Notre Dame returned to the tournament in 1989 where they went 1-2 in the West II regional.

1994

For just the second time in Notre Dame baseball history, 1994 saw the Irish qualify for their third-straight NCAA tournament as they went 2-2 in the East.

1996

After a hiccup in 1995 that left the Irish out, Notre Dame returned to the field in 1996 and went 1-2 in South Regional 1 play.

1999

1999 saw the Fighting Irish host their first regional in program history but the Irish were quickly eliminated after going just 1-2.

2000

2000 saw Notre Dame take regional host Mississippi State to three games but ultimately fell as the Bulldogs moved on to the Super Regionals and the Irish went home after going 3-2 in tournament play.

Notre Dame again hosted a regional in 2001 but fell twice to third-seeded Florida International and were eliminated after a 3-2 tournament record.

2002

Notre Dame upset Florida State in the Super Regionals and moved on to the College World Series for the second time in program history.  The Irish ultimately finished in fifth place nationally after compiling a 6-3 overall record in the 2002 NCAA tournament.

2003

Notre Dame made it five straight NCAA baseball tournament appearances in 2002 but was eliminated from the Fullerton regional after going 2-2.
