Notebook: Observations from Michigan football’s win over Purdue
Michigan football released some interesting trivia and notes from the 41-13 win over Purdue, but there are some other things from the game that were notable.
Here are some of our notes from the game.
Keon Sabb vs. Quinten Johnson seems to be an emerging position battle. Sabb took a few starts early in the year, and played very well, but Johnson had more run against Purdue. This could have been a game-specific adjustment, but look for the two of them to battle for more reps.
DJ Waller will be burning his redshirt, it appears. The true freshman was once again on the field early in the game, showing how highly the staff thinks of him. He ended up getting beat deep, but the point remains that Waller is a guy the staff has taken notice of early.
Semaj Morgan is simply a dude. That’s his third touchdown of the season, and it showcased another strength of his game: speed. The in-state true freshman has come onto the scene in a big way this season and is even fighting with Tyler Morris for the third wide receiver spot. He will be a role player this year but should be a huge part of the plan next season.
Thaw and Morris continue to battle it out for PR duties. It looks like Morris is the guy when some juice is needed, but Thaw is more reliable fielding punts cleanly. Thaw broke a nice return today, though, so we will see if that changes anything about the staff’s plan.
Just generally love how unselfish this offense is. There’s no realistic way for Wilson, Johnson, Barner, Loveland, Edwards, Corum, Morris, Morgan, Clemons and Mullings to get as many touches as they deserve each week. There’s simply too much talent on this team. This seems like a terrifically supportive environment without any jealousy. Speaks to the character of each guy on the roster.
