North Florida men's golf team has an uphill battle to make the 54-hole cut in NCAA tournament

The University of North Florida men’s golf team will have a tall task on Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Championship.

The Ospreys improved 10 shots from their first-round score of 19-over at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif., but are still tied for 20th at 28-over par 604, six shots behind 15th place Stanford.

The top 15 teams after Sunday’s third round will make the cut. The top eight after Monday’s fourth round advance to match play. UNF is 16 shots behind three teams tied for sixth at 12-over, Florida State, Ohio State and Arizona.

Virginia leads at 1-over, followed by Illinois at 4-over, Vanderbilt at 7-over, Auburn at 10-over and North Carolina at 11-over. Defending champion Florida is tied for 12th at 21-over.

UNF senior Nick Gabrelcik (72) is tied for 22nd at 2-over 146. Fellow senior Robbie Higgins (74) is tied for 66th at 7-over 151.

Karl Villips of Stanford (69) is 7-under and has a five-shot lead in the individual standings over George Duangmanee of Virginia (71) and Adam Wallin of Ohio State (74).

Luke Clanton (74) is the low Florida State player in a tie for 15th at 1-over and Jack Turner (73) is leads the Gators in a tie for 22nd with Gabrelcik.
