Outlook

Willingboro walked into Al Saner Field last Nov. 5 for an NJSIAA South Group 2 semifinal and stunned then unbeaten and defending sectional champion Point Pleasant Boro 50-30.

That game was the coming out party for Best. He threw for 208 yards and five TDs while going 11-for-14.

Point Boro has been waiting ever since then for a chance at redemption.

Slowing Best down has to be priority No. 1 for a Point Boro defense that would love to show it is much better than it was against the Chimeras a year ago.

Willingboro has to prevent Point Boro's triple-option offense out of the flexbone alignment from getting off to a quick start. If the Panthers get rolling early, they can be almost impossible to slow down with the 1-2 running tandem of Oliphant and Croce. Croce became Point Boro's all-time leading career rusher last week.

Oliphant, besides averating well over 10 yards a carry, has outstanding in his limited opportunities to throw. For the most part, Point Boro has been able to throw when it wants to - not when the opponent and game situation has dicatated it must throw. Willingboro would love to put the Panthers in those situations.

Expect the scoreboard to get a workout and expect a game filled with big plays by both offenses.

It could come down to the last team with the ball wins.

It is the third straight season the two teams have met in the playoffs. Point Boro defeated Willingboro 32-8 in the 2021 South Group 2 final.

The winner faces the winner of the South 2 final between Haddonfield and Rumson-Fair Haven next week in the state semifinal.

The Pick: Point Pleasant Boro.

Winslow sectional championship (1):

2021.

Outlook

Long Branch has gotten healthy and hot at the right time. The Green Wave have also become road warriors. They have won three road playoff games in the last two seasons.

Winslow has been one of the leading contenders in Group 4 state-wide all season.

The return of Reevey to the quarterback position full-time after he had a broken thumb much of the season has steadied the Long Branch offense. Reevey's ability to get to the corner running the ball and his accuracy throwing the ball combined with the power running of Craft, who became eligible in the fourth game of the season after his transfer from Neptune, has made the Green Wave's offense multi-dimensional.

Long Branch was physical on both sides of the ball in its win over then-unbeaten Brick Memorial last week in the sectional semifinal. Defensively, they made Brick Memorial's standout senior quarterback Connor Dietz earn every yard he got and consistently had a lot of people swarm to the ball.

The Green Wave's defense has been outstanding in the playoffs after they allowed 57 points against Colts Neck on Oct. 21. Last week, Long Branch stopped Brick Memorial twice at the 2, including a key fumble recovery on the game's first series, and also blocked a field goal on the last play of the first half.

However, they face a different challenge here. Winslow is explosive on offense.

Miller set the school's single-season receiving yards record last week in the sectional sectional semifinal against Hammonton. He had TD receptions of 65 and 80 yards and three receptions for 185 yards last week

Ruffin, the nephew of former Paulsboro NJSIAA heavyweight wrestling champion Jermaine Ruffin, was at West Deptford and Camden earlier in the career. He sat out the first four games under NJSIAA transfer rules and became the full-time QB when freshman Jalen Parker sustained a season-ending injury last month. Parker had thrown for 1,511 yards and 21 TDs before his injury.

Ruffin was also benched in his third game back against Washington Township on Oct. 6, but has thrown for 578 yards and five TDs in the Eagles' two playoff games, including 348 yards and three TDs last week.

Long Branch does not want this game to become a track meet. It has to slow the game down to have a chance.

Winslow's defeat to Washington Township came on a Hail Mary on the last play of the game.

The winner faces the winner of the South 4 final between defending Group 4 champion Millville and unbeaten Mainland next week in the state semifinal.

The Pick: Winslow.

Ja'Elyne Matthews (Jr., OL/DL., 58 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks).

Jeremiah Pruitt (Sr., WR/DB., 16-454, 9 TDs receiving, 45-198, 4 TDs rushing, 73 tackles, 15.5 tackles for a loss, 3 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries).

Camryn Thomas (Jr., WR., 14-292 4 TDs,

Nasir Jackson (Jr., WR/DB., 7-77 1 TD, 27 tackles, 2 INTs, 1 kick return for a TD).

Toms River North sectional championships (7):

1979, 1991, 1994, 1997, 2007, 2015, 2022.

Outlook

The closest game Toms River North had in 2022, when it went 14-0 and rolled to the Group 5 state championship, came in a 28-21 win over Washington Township in the season-opener at the Battle of the Beach.

Even though that was over 14 months ago, that game has to give Washington Township confidence it can compete with the Mariners.

However, Washington Township has a different quarterback than it did that day when Dziergowski was the quarterback and ran for 102 yards and three TDs on 14 carries and threw for 85 yards. Ford ran for 145 yards and two TDs, threw a TD pass to Council and Pruitt had an interception return for a score.

Aquino took over at QB in mid-season after he and Dziergowski had split time early in the season. Dziergowski has been moved to running back and ran for more than 100 yards in three straight games from Oct. 6-20.

Toms River North is finally fully healthy with Ford more than back in the fold after missing three straight games and the last three quarters and the overtime against Red Bank Catholic due to a knee injury.

Ford had a superb all-around performance last week against Freehold Township in the sectional semifinal, when he ran for two TDs, threw for two more, ran for a 2-point conversion, threw a 2-point conversion and returned an interception for a score.

He played on defense last week for the first time since Sept. 15 against Donovan Catholic.

Obviously, Washington Township has to prevent Ford from dominating the game. That is easier said, than done.

Toms River North has to cut down on penalties. It commited 16 penalties, 10 of which were personal fouls.

We are now at the stage of the playoffs where an abundance of penalties could be really costly.

The winner faces the winner of the South 5 final between Marlboro and Cherokee next week in the state semifinal.

The Pick: Toms River North.

Rumson-Fair Haven sectional championships (7):

2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2022.

Outlook

The two programs have been models of consistency since 2010.

Rumson-Fair Haven is appearing in a sectional championship game for the 10th straight season the NJSIAA playoffs have been held and the 12th time in the last 13 seasons the playoffs have taken place.

Haddonfield has had success against Shore Conference teams in recent seasons. In 2021, it defeated Raritan in the Central Group 2 championship game and Point Boro in the South Group 2 regional final.

Both programs are well-coached and balanced on offense.

Haddonfield relies a bit more on the run. Rumson-Fair Haven a bit more on the pass. But, Haddonfield is more than capable of throwing the ball and Rumson is capable of running the ball.

Rumson-Fair Haven has had trouble, at times stopping the run. But, some of that can be attributed to playing teams such as Toms River North, Point Pleasant Boro and Donovan Catholic. It also had trouble running the ball at times against some of those teams, but has been more consistent running the ball lately.

Gallagher has been a big-play threat lately. He has seven receptions for 216 yards and four TDs in Rumson-Fair Haven's two playoff games.

O'Toole has thrown for 404 yards and five TDs the last two weeks

Rumson-Fair Haven has played the slightly tougher schedule.

The Pick: Rumson-Fair Haven

Outlook

It is a matchup of a program that is used to being in this game and one who is not.

Cherokee is making its 17th appearance in a sectional final. Marlboro is making just its second and first in 29 years.

Both teams emphasize the run.

Cassidy is a power runner, who loves to run between the tackles. He also has deceptive speed. Cassidy is one of the Shore's best all-around players and hardly ever comes off the field.

Consolazio had six sacks against Howell and is constant threat coming off the edge. Houston had three interceptions last week and Marlboro came up with six turnovers in the 12-0 win at Hillsborough in the sectional semifinal.

Cherokee has always been a program that has emphasized the run game.

Marlboro allowed just 37 points in its first six games and has allowed just 105 points on the season. The Mustangs were one of the few teams to hold Jackson Memorial sophomore Jonah Glenn under 100 yards.

Whichever team can force the other to throw more than it wants will be the team that wins

Rubin could be a factor. He booted two field goals last week at Hillsborough.

Cherokee's defeats are to teams still alive in the playoffs, including powerful Millville.

The Pick: Marlboro.

Non Public B Semifinal

4. Holy Spirit (8-1) at 1. Red Bank Catholic (8-1), 7 p.m.

The two meet for the second straight season in this round.

Red Bank Catholic won 50-21 last season in the snow at Count Basie Field after Holy Spirit had jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead.

Holy Spirit is much more balanced than it was last year, when it threw the ball more than 35 times a game and had almost twice as many passing yards as it did rushing yards.

This season, the Spartans have run the ball for 1,420 yards and thrown for 1,280. They are averging 31 rushing attempts a game and 16.4 passing attempts a game.

Sophomore Ty Constabile has thrown for 1,226 yards and 17 TDs with seven interceptions. Three receivers have 10 or more receptions.

Sophomore Emir Hicks has run for 735 yards and five TDs.

Red Bank Catholic had a bye last week after it had played consecutive grueling games against Toms River North and Donovan Catholic. Those two wins pretty much clinched the No. 1 spot in the final Asbury Park Press Top 20.

Junior quarterback Frankie Williams, who has thrown for 1,352 yards and 14 TDs, and senior receiver and Stanford University-recruit Emanuel Ross, who has 38 receptions for 611 yards and nine TDs, are players who are capable of breaking the game open. Ross had four receptions for 106 yards and two TDs against Holy Spirit last season.

The winner meets the DePaul-St. Thomas Aquinas winner in the state championship game Nov. 28 at MetLife Stadium. DePaul and Red Bank Catholic have split the last two state finals, with DePaul winning last season.

The Pick: Red Bank Catholic

SATURDAY

Non Public A Quarterfinal

5. St. Augustine (8-2) at 4. Donovan Catholic (8-2), 6:30 p.m.

These two opened the season against each other on Aug. 25 at Donovan Catholic. Donovan Catholic built a 21-point lead in the second quarter and then hung on for a 21-16 win.

The Griffins held St. Augustine to 47 yards rushing on 30 attempts that night. Hermits' junior Julian Turney, who has rushed for 1,228 yards and 18 TDs, had just 39 yards on 15 attempts and a TD in the first meeting.

Turney has rushed for 629 yards and 11 TDs in the last four weeks, including a 196-yard, four TD performance in the 35-14 win over St. Peter's Prep last week in the first round.

Senior quarterback Ryan Gambil has thrown for 796 yards and seven TDs on just 57 completions in 100 attempts.

Donovan Catholic recorded a wild 31-28 win over Paramus Catholic last week in the first round. The Griffins led 21-0, fell behind 28-21 and then won it on a 30-yard field goal by Dante Priolo with no time remaining.

Senior quarterback Todd Lambertson threw for 148 yards and a TD last week.

Sophomore running back Najee Calhoun ran for two TDs and surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the season last week.

In the first meeting with St. Augustine, Lambertson threw two TD passes to junior receiver Michael Thomas III, including a 75-yarder.

St. Augustine's only other defeat was 21-7 to Millville. It has a win over Cherokee.

Donovan Catholic's defeats are to St. Joseph (Montvale) and Red Bank Catholic. It has a win over Toms River North with Ford in the Mariners' lineup for most of the game.

This can go either way. The winner will likely have to travel to Bergen Catholic, ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey Non Public Top 10 next week for the semifinal.

The Pick: St. Augustine.
