Jan 26 (The Sports Xchange) - The Miami Dolphins hired Tampa Bay Buccaneers director of player personnel Dennis Hickey as their new general manager, the team announced Sunday. Hickey will replace Jeff Ireland, who parted ways with the Dolphins earlier this month after six years as the team's GM. Stephen Ross, the Dolphins' chairman of the board and managing general partner, announced the hiring. Hickey will oversee all aspects of football operations, reporting directly to Ross, and head coach Joe Philbin will continue to oversee his coaching staff and report directly to Ross. - - - San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis had recent surgery on his thumb, the Sacramento Bee reported. The inside linebacker's left thumb is now in a cast, as recent photos from his Instagram account show and as a league source confirmed to the newspaper.
