NHL Three Stars: Kings finally score; four assists for Seguin; Condon wins debut
No. 1 Star: Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars
Really good night for those out there with Seguin on their fantasy team(s). Dallas lit up the St. Louis Blues by a score of 6-2 with Seguin assisting on four of the six goals.
No. 2 Star: Mike Condon, Ottawa Senators
Condon was acquired by the Senators from the Penguins yesterday. He started in relief of Craig Anderson who left the team to be with his wife as she battles cancer, and the injured Andrew Hammond. In his first game with the Sens, Condon picked up his second career shutout on this 27 save effort against the Vancouver Canucks.
No. 3 Star: Frederik Andersen, Toronto Maple Leafs
It’s been a really, really rough start to the season for poor Freddie Andersen. The Buffalo Sabres threw 43 shots on goal (and 70 shot attempts total) and only one puck got past him in the Leafs 2-1 win.
Honorable Mention: Christian Dvorak scored his first NHL goal in the Coyotes shootout win over the Nashville Predators. Louis Domingue made 35 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped both shooters in the shootout … Antii Niemi saved 28 of 30 versus St. Louis. Four of Dallas’s six goals came from defensemen; John Klingberg scored two … Mitch Marner earned his first two goal game of his young NHL career:
… The Jets came back from a 3-0 deficit against the Washington Capitals by scoring three straight goals in the third period. The Capitals prevailed with Alex Ovechkin netting his second goal of the night in overtime while on the power play … Matt Read tied the game at 3-3 with 58 seconds to go on the third as the Philadelphia Flyesr were on the power play. Claude Giroux ended his 10 game point streak tonight against the New York Islanders, but totally made up for it with an incredible shootout goal.
Michal Neuvirth sealed the win for Philly by poke-checking John Tavares on his shootout attempt.
… The New York Rangers came back three times in the game against the Edmonton Oilers, and finally took their first lead of the game on a Rick Nash goal with 1:21 remaining in the third. J.T. Miller put in an empty netter to ice the game at 5-2. Connor McDavid assisted on this Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal where he accidentally-on purpose passed the puck with his foot to RNH:
… After shutting out the Colorado Avalanche with 38 saves, Corey Crawford is on a four game win streak … The Tampa Bay Lightning came back to tie the game against the Boston Bruins and force a shootout. TEN (10!) ROUNDS later, Jimmy Hayes beat Andrei Vasilevskiy to give the B’s the win.
Pavel Zacha’s first NHL goal came at the perfect time as the rookie tied the contest with 3:55 to go. Vincent Trocheck won it for the Florida Panthers in overtime with his second goal of the game … Matthew Tkatchuk recorded his first two-goal game of his NHL career as the Calgary Flames beat the San Jose Sharks, 3-2 … THE LOS ANGELES KINGS FINALLY SCORED A GOAL. They ended a goal-less drought of 205:25 when Trevor Lewis beat Marc-Andre Fleury. Sidney Crosby had two goals for the Pens as they, too, went to the shootout. The Kings have yet to win in regulation, but they’re a perfect 5-0 in overtime this year.
Did You Know? With Marian Hossa’s two goals tonight, he becomes the highest scoring Slovakian in NHL history.
Dishonorable Mention: David Perron was a minus-4 against the Stars. Nail Yakupov was stapled to the bench playing a team low 7:28 … The Canucks have lost six straight in regulation after starting the season 4-0-1. Plays like this from Jakob Markstrom that lead to the Senators only goal doesn’t help:
… Winnipeg’s Joel Armia and Matthieu Perreault left the game with injuries. Paul Maurice did not appreciate the ‘too many men’ penalty assessed to his team in OT … Nashville’s power play was 1-for-7 against Arizona … Nathan MacKinnon has not scored a goal since the first game of the season … Claude Julien healthy scratched Matt Beleskey.
