Olympic gymnast runs up $5,000 phone bill playing Pokemon Go in Brazil

Reigning Olympic all-around gold medalist Kohei Uchimura might be feeling the pressure to defend his title in Rio de Janeiro, but it’s the gyms of Pokemon Go that have caused him the most stress.

Japanese media outlet Kyodo reports that Uchimura racked up a $5,000 phone bill because of the data roaming charges he incurred while playing the game in Brazil. Like many international jet-setters, it appears that Uchimura forgot to adjust his phone plan before setting off for Brazil.

“He looked dead at the team meal that day,” teammate Kenzo Shirai told Kyodo.

Uchimura was ultimately saved from having to pay the bill after he explained what happened to his phone company. They ended up charging Uchimura a much more manageable rate of 3,000 yen (around $30) per day.

“I really lucked out,” Uchimura told Kyodo.

It’s unclear in what capacity Uchimura was playing the game, as Pokemon Go isn’t yet fully supported in Brazil, much to the disappointment of Olympic athletes in Rio. Parts of the game appear to be still operable, so though the Olympic Village is devoid of Pokemon and PokeStops, users can transfer and evolve Pokemon they’ve caught previously. It’s also possible for users to fake their location by “jailbreaking” their iPhone (though be careful about trying this, folks).
