Ed Reed says Wade Phillips behind his release from Texans
New York Jets safety Ed Reed blamed defensive coordinator Wade Phillips for his release from the Houston Texans
Reed was cut two days after saying the Texans were "outplayed and outcoached" in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
"Wade said something to me, he basically just made sure I was leaving," Reed said during a conference call with Baltimore reporters "He was probably the guy, the reason I'm not there. But it's all good, man. I'm not worried about it."
Reed had 16 tackles, no interceptions, no pass deflections and no forced fumbles after signing a three-year, $15 milllion contract with the Texans in March. He had hip surgery and was later benched by the Texans, replaced by Shiloh Keo in the starting lineup.
"That defense is not a good fit for a lot of people who is still down there, so it wasn't just about me," Reed said. "People might feel a certain way, like, 'Ed did this and Ed didn't do things on the football field.' But you've got to look at the playcaller. People don't know how the schematic part of it goes. You have to put your players in position to make plays as well, from a coaching perspective."
Reed said the Jets and coach Rex Ryan, his former defensive coordinator in Baltimore, was the lone team to reach out to him when he got released.
"Coming from the situation that I came from to a coach that understands you and respects your game and respects you as a man -- it's a good thing," Reed said. "It's a good thing to be back around that, knowing that the whole league is not that way."
