Howard strolled from his swank Midtown hotel, directly across from Central Park, and prepared to hop into an SUV when a teenage fan, wearing a Rockets T-shirt with Howard's name and No. 12, rushed to the back seat seeking a picture. After obliging the shy but giddy fan, Howard took an hour-long ride to the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, where he hoped to put smiles on the faces of another group of teenagers at Crossroads Juvenile Detention Center.
