Nelson, Ebert prevail at Silver 1000

Sep. 5—PROCTOR — Darrell Nelson of Hermantown made it four Late Model championships at the Silver 1000 to go with seven in the Modified class by dominating the second half of Thursday's feature at Halvor Lines Raceway in Proctor.

Nelson ran second over the first half of the race before overtaking Harry Hanson of Eveleth with 28 laps to go. He concluded a long green-flag run by claiming a confident 3.6-second margin of victory.

Hanson settled for second ahead of Derek Vesel of Hibbing, Ashley Anderson of Menomonie, Wisconsin and John Kaanta of Elk Mound, Wisconsin.

In the WISSOTA Modifieds, Dan Ebert of Lake Shore, Minnesota became a first-time Silver 1000 winner.

Starting from the front row, Ebert moved into the lead early, but had to face a big challenge in the closing laps from Brandon Copp of Brule on a restart with less than 20 laps to go. However, he only had lapped traffic to deal with down the stretch while the cars behind him tussled for position.

Fellow front-row starter Mike Anderson came home second, while Johnny Broking of Grand Rapids turned a 14th-place start into a third-place finish. Al Uotinen (Superior) and Darrell Nelson rounded out the top five.

A field of 39 Late Models and 30 Modifieds took part in the historic event, which dates back to 1973.
