National qualifier and more: Cape Cod high school boys track and field athletes to watch

The cross country (fall) and indoor track and field (winter) seasons are over, but the outdoor track and field athletes are just warming up for the spring season.

This list of boys athletes includes school record holders, state and national qualifiers, and even athletes making their debuts.

Here are some boys indoor track and field athletes to keep on eye on this season.

James Barnicle, Dennis-Yarmouth

The sophomore makes his debut this season and will compete in the 400-meter and the 4x400 meter relay.

"James has already made his mark scoring multiple firsts in the 400m and anchoring our 4x400 team," D-Y head coach Colin Kulis said. "He is an avid competitor and pushes his teammates everyday to work hard and get better."

Craig Bloem, Dennis-Yarmouth

The sophomore will be busy this spring as he competes in the 110 high hurdles, 400 hurdles, triple jump and long jump.

"Craig is one of the harder working athletes we have," Kulis said. "He runs the hardest race out there in the 400 hurdles, and pushed himself to get better at them everyday. He also is an exceptional triple jumper, constantly improving his technique and is really starting to hit his stride."

Shemar Dillion, Dennis-Yarmouth

The junior competes in the 100m, 4x100m relay, long jump and high jump.

"Shemar is a phenomenal athlete and incredibly hard worker," Kulis said. "This year already he has hit PRs (personal records) in the long jump and 100m. He is also the anchor leg for our 4x100 relay."

Alique Brown, Monomoy

The freshman will compete in the 100m, 200m, and the 4x100m relay. He is coming off a season where he was the Division 6 state champion in the 100m.

"Alique comes back this year stronger, more mature, and ready to add additional events to his repertoire in hopes of competing with the best in the state and New England region," Monomoy head coach Adam Syty said.

Jude Hutchings-McMahon, Monomoy

The sophomore will compete in the 400 hurdles, 400m, 4x100m relays, and jumps.

"Jude had grown into a strong long sprinter," Syty said. "With his attention to detail and willingness to learn the hurdles, he will be a tough athlete to beat."

Sean Needham, Monomoy

Needham will compete in the 100 hurdles, 100m, and jumps for his sophomore, and first overall, season on the track and field.

"Sean brings a ton of athleticism from the football field," Syty said. "His coordination and quick learning will allow him to be a threat in many shorter events."

Damian Bebber, Nauset

In his final high school season, Bebber will compete in the 400m, 200m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, and the triple jump. He holds the school record in the 400m, was the League champion last year, and went to the New England Championship Meet (7th) and the Nationals in Oregon.

"Damian is the most focused and determined runner at Nauset," Nauset head coach Moira Nobili said. "His work ethic and attention to detail has shown his teammates how success can be achieved."

Adian Brown, Nauset

Brown will compete in the 110 hurdles, 100m, and the 4x100m relay for his junior season. He was undefeated in the 110 hurdles and was the League champion for two years and made All-States last spring.

"Adian is an extremely fast, efficient and very competitive runner," Nobili said. "He is a pleasure to watch practice and compete and is constantly setting his goals higher."

Paytah Dill, Nauset

The senior will be busy in his last high school season as she competes in the 100m, 110 hurdles, long jump, high jump, discus, and the 4x100 relay.

"Paytah is one of the most versatile and flexible athletes at Nauset , which is why he was track MVP this winter," Nobili said. "Not only is he Nauset’s highest point scorer, he is also an invaluable leader and mentor for the whole team."

Connor Bruni, Sandwich

The senior captain is a distance runner and competes in the mile and two-mile.

"Connor is the hardest worker," Sandwich head coach Amy Clini said. "He brings so much energy and commitment to the team. We are looking forward to seeing him reach all his goals in his senior season."

Adam Ferreira, Sandwich

The junior captain competes in the javelin, 100m, and high jump.

"Adam is the epitome of a track and field athlete," Clini said. "He can run, jump, and throw with the best of the South Shore League, and we know he is going to be very successful in his last two seasons."

Jake Whelan, Sandwich

The senior captain will compete in the 400m, hurdles, and the javelin.

"Jake brings so much joy and happiness to the track every day," Clini said. "He completes every workout with a smile on his face and a kind word to all his teammates. He is extremely reliable and works hard to be a great athlete and captain."
