Name of new Frederick pro basketball team announced

Sep. 10—The name of Frederick's new professional basketball team was announced on Saturday — the Flying Cows.

The team will be part of The Basketball League, an independent pro league with dozens of teams across the country.

The Flying Cows was one of four finalists announced in advance, as part of a contest in which the public would choose the winner. The three other final choices announced in advance were Brew Bears, Drache ("dragon" in German) and Howling Dwayyo (a wolf-like creature).

The fifth final name choice, announced on Saturday, was Knighthood.

All of the name choices had an animal theme, as part of a "Fear the Beast" theme.

Team co-owners Michael Witt and Tony Mazlish, coach Ed Corporal and others gathered at Carroll Creek on Saturday during the In the Streets festival for an announcement event.

For each of the four finalist names that were known in advance, one person who voted for that name was invited to be part of the event, too.

For the Flying Cows, that was Ann Wagner, the new head of school at The Banner School. She won two lifetime season tickets because the Flying Cows won the contest.

She said in an interview that she's a basketball fan and roots for the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Three other fans chosen to represent the finalist team name they chose — Brew Bears, Drache and Howling Dwayyo — each won season tickets for a year.

More than 1,000 people voted in the naming contest.

The Flying Cows will play at Hood College's BB&T Arena, starting in March 2024.
