The Montgomery Advertiser breaks down Auburn’s strengths and weaknesses ahead of postseason
The Auburn Tigers are hosting a regional for the second consecutive season. Last year, the Tigers made it out and went on to play the Oregon State Beavers in the Corvallis Super Regional before advancing to the College World Series.
Auburn’s draw of opponents is interesting. The Tigers will take on Southern Miss, Samford, and Penn.
There is certainly a good chance of Auburn making it out, but there is always a chance that things do not go according to plan.
In an article from the Montgomery Advertiser, Rich Silva talks about Auburn’s strengths and weaknesses ahead of this weekend’s regional.
The main reason Silva says the Tigers could make it out is that they are simply playing with momentum on their side.
“Auburn ended the regular season as one of the hottest teams in the country,” Silva said. “Over an 18-game stretch dating between their win over Samford on April 18 and their victory over Missouri in Hoover, the Tigers went 14-4 and outscored opponents 155-83, which equates to an average margin of victory of four runs.”
The thing that Silva believes will hold Auburn back, is their struggles on the bump.
“The Tigers have a team ERA of 5.80, good for No. 136 in the country and third-worst in the regional behind Penn (4.00) and Southern Miss (4.60). Samford’s pitchers have an ERA of 6.00 this season.”
It will certainly be interesting to see what Auburn can do. Could this be the start of another run to Omaha? Or will Auburn be hitting summer vacation earlier than desired?
