Monomoy's win streak leads the way: Cape Cod and Islands high school softball rankings

The regular season for Cape Cod and Islands softball has come to an end.

There may not be a huge showing in the postseason for Cape and Islands teams, but that does not mean there it not a lot of talent.

Monomoy leads the way, having won 16 straight games, and appears like they can make a run in the postseason. The other four spots on this list are up for grabs.

Here are the second Cape Cod and Islands softball rankings of the season.

1. Monomoy (19-1, 1)

The Sharks lost on April 10 as Falmouth shut them out 8-0 in the fourth game of the season. They have not lost a game since and have rallied off 16 straight wins. Something about that defeat woke up the Sharks, and now they are swimming through their competitors. They have scored double-digit runs in 11 games over their current win streak, and have held seven of their opponents to two runs or fewer.

Monomoy has a good team from top to bottom. Whether it's on the mound with Alana Lojko or Kinsey Lister, or at the plate with AJ Gates, Kiley Mawn, Bella Bellefeuille, Kate Huse, Hailey Lanciani, Lilly Furman, or Willa Leighton, the depth is what has them playing so well. They don't have a "star" player, so anybody can lead the team to victory on any given night. That could cause problems for teams in the playoffs.

2. Falmouth (11-7, 2)

The second spot has to go to the only team to figure out Monomoy this season: the Clippers handed them their only loss. While the Sharks may not have a star player, the Clippers surely do, and her name is Rylin Briggs. Briggs had the best back-to-back games on the Cape and Islands this season. She pitched seven innings, struck out 19, and allowed three hits for Falmouth in an 8-3 win over Sturgis. In that same game at the plate, Briggs went 2-for-3, with a home run, two scored runs and two RBIs. Two days later, she threw a no-hitter and handed Monomoy its only loss.

Briggs is the best player on Falmouth, but not the only contributor. Anna Bennett, Christina Femino, Molly Belfiore, Katie Medeiros and Kaylee Shaw have played well. This group has scored double-digit runs in nine of their 11 wins, and have only allowed more than three runs to an opponent in one of their wins. When they are playing this well on both sides, they are tough to beat.

3. Bourne (7-12, 3)

The Lady Canalmen gets the third spot because they had the toughest schedule on the Cape Cod and Islands. Bourne is the only team on this list with wins over multiple playoffs teams as they beat Seekonk (18th, Div. 3), Bishop Stang (32nd, Div. 3), and West Bridgewater (31st, Div. 4). The losses have been to some of the best in the state including Joseph Case twice (1st, Div. 4), Dighton-Rehoboth (1st, Div. 3), Somerset Berkley (7th, Div. 2), Monomoy, Greater New Bedford (10th, Div. 3), and Apponequet (2nd, Div. 3).

Jadyn Morrell, Jillian Allen, Olivia Meda, Paige Meda, Haylee McDonald and Michaela Muldooon have been the leaders for Bourne this season. Bourne started the season 1-6, and have gone 6-6 since to clinch a spot in the postseason.

4. Dennis-Yarmouth (8-12, 5)

The Dolphins have also quietly had one of the tougher schedules on the Cape and Islands as well. They may have 12 losses but they have fallen to teams like Mansfield (24th, Div. 2), Wareham twice (22nd, Div. 4), Monomoy twice, Marshfield twice (18th, div. 1), Plymouth South (10th, Div. 2), and Falmouth twice. They would have a spot in the playoffs if not for the opponents they had to face. Alexa Barboza, Alexa Buron, Brooke Chicoine, Charleigh Hicks, Lily Leandre, Pasty Newell and Savannah Azoff have led the Dolphins this season.

5. Upper Cape (8-9, 4)

The Rams were one win away from being a playoff team. Taysia Lopes has been the leader on the mound and at the plate for Upper Cape. Taylor Landers, Amya Irving, Allie Walsh, Emma King, Lucy Pesta, and Meadow Diede all have contributed for the Rams too. The Rams have scored at least 20 runs in at least six games, which included a 32-run game against Mashpee. The have nine losses, but four of them have been to Wareham twice (22nd, Div. 4), and Norfolk Aggie twice (18th, Div. 5). They also dropped games to South Shore Tech and Old Colony by one run, which could have turned their season around.

Honorable Mention

Nantucket (9-8)

The Whalers get this mention because they will be one of the few teams on the Cape and Islands to make the playoffs. The Whalers had a nice stretch where they won six games in a row after a 2-5 start. Nantucket has scored 17 runs in every single victory this season, including five games with at least 21 runs, and one 33-run game against St. John Paul II.

Nauset (8-12)

The Warriors get a spot on this list because they beat the playoff-bound Whalers three times this season. The Warriors are the only Cape and Islands team to score at least 34 runs in two games this season. Alex Mince, Amelia Francis, Audrey Silva, Brynn Kew, Cammie Rose, Ellie Comier, Lila Alger, Molly Farrell and Naomi Francis have all played key roles for Nauset.
