Monday's other sports highlights include ESD tennis, Region 1A boys golf and Miller cross country

YANKTON — It's seven down and one huge one to go for Watertown High School's boys golf team.

The Arrows shot 4-under 284 for their seventh-consecutive win and third-straight Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament championship on Monday at the Fox Run Golf Course.

The Arrows won by two shots over Harrisburg in their final competition before they chase after their first state title since 1971 on Monday and Tuesday in the state Class AA tournament at the Brandon Golf Course.

"It was a battle today," said Watertown head coach Corey Neale. "Harrisburg is a really-talented team. We've had close finishes with them all year and I expect the same next week at state."

Watertown senior Jake Olson made a bid for his fourth ESD title (and third in a row) with a 2-under 70. He tied for second with Parker Schultz of Harrisburg, two shots behind champion Hayden Scott of Harrisburg.

All six Arrow golfers earned All-ESD honors with top-15 finishes. Jaden Solheim and Kaden Rylance tied for fourth with 71s, Johnny Lake tied for fifth with a 72 and Gabe Norberg and Ty Lenards each tied for 14th with 76s.

"The guys did a really great job today of grinding through every shot and staying focused on their round until the last putt was hole," said Neale.

ESD Girls Tennis Tournament

PIERRE — Defending champion Watertown went 6-0 in first-round singles matches to grab the opening-day lead in the Eastern South Dakota Conference girls tennis tournament on Monday.

The Arrows scored 90 points, followed by Mitchell at 78, Aberdeen Central 70, Yankton 50, Brandon Valley 42, Huron 30 and Brookings, Harrisburg and Pierre each 0. Play-in matches for singles and doubles were held along with all first-round doubles matches.

Aberdeen Central went 5-1 in singles.

The tourney is slated to conclude on Tuesday.

Region 1A Boys Golf

SISSETON — Jonathan DeBoer of Milbank and Groton Area captured titles Monday in the Region 1A boys golf tourney at the Valley View Country Club.

DeBoer shot a 7-over 79 to win medalist honors by one shot over five golfers.

Groton Area won the team title with a 335 score, three shots better than Sioux Valley and nine better than Aberdeen Roncalli. All three teams and the top 25 individuals qualified for the state Class A tourney on Monday and Tuesday at the Hart Ranch Golf Course in Rapid City.

Groton Invitational Cross Country

MILLER — Kaleb Foltz of Tri-State and Morgan Sumption of Frederick Area produced victories Monday in the Groton Invitational cross country meet at the Olive Grove Golf Course.

Foltz won his fifth-straight race, taking the 41-runner boys' 5,000-meter event in 17 minutes and 29.61 seconds. he was followed across the line by Milo Sumption of Frederick Area (18:34.90), Aidan Thurber of Ellendale, N.D. (19:08.62), Austin Jenkins of Leola (19:26.46) and Kalen Godel of Langford Area (19:53.21).

Sumption berat 23 other runners to the finish line in the girls' race, winning in 20:46.92. Madison Zirbel of Waubay-Summit was second (21:15.60), followed by Jillian Ellwein of Frederick Area (21:58.7), Rylee Gilbert of Groton Area (22:08.16) and Hazel Kannegaiter of Aberdeen Roncalli (22:321.22.).

Miller Invitational Cross Country

MILLER — Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern and Alex Schumacher of Miller won individual races on Monday during the Miller Invitational cross country meet at the Miller Golf Course.

Sixty-nine boys and 39 girls ran in the 5,000-meter races.

Boekelheide won the girls' race in a time of 19 minutes and 26.77 seconds. Heidi Olson of Mobridge-Pollock was second (19:51.14), Autumn Fallis of Highmore-Harrold third (20:47.66) and Dannika Kaupf (20:47.66) and Emma Schlachter (21:00.11) of Potter County fourth and fifth, respectively.

Schumacher had a winning time of 16:48.61 in the boys race. Wakely Burns of Philip was second (16:55.31), followed by Nicholas Schlachter of Potter County (17:00.30), Pierce Baumberger of Miller (17:13.45) and Asher Peterson of Philip (17:25.25).

Potter County's girls and Philip's boys won team titles.
