Saturday roundup: Hoover girls tennis team places third in the state in OTCA Tournament

AREA ROUNDUP

GIRLS TENNIS

The Hoover girls tennis team finished its season with a victory in the third-place match of the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Tournament on Saturday.

The Vikings lost to defending state champion Mason in the semifinal round before rallying to defeat Whitehouse Anthony Wayne 3-0 in the consolation round. Tess Bucher, Ema Papcke and the doubles team of Lindsey Crawford and Calista Leghart all recorded wins in the consolation match. The other two matches were not finished.

Hoover wraps up the season with a record of 26-1. Bucher, a senior, won an individual OHSAA Division I state championship on Friday. becoming the first Stark County girl to win a big-school state title.

CROSS COUNTRY

Minerva swept the boys and girls team championships at the Division II district meet in Cambridge.

Katie Ison of the Lions won the girls race in 19:40.73. She led five Minerva runners who finished in the top eight. The Lions recorded a 54-point win over runner-up West Holmes.

Grasyn Rettig came in second and Rowen Hoffee placed third to lead the Minerva boys. The Lions finished 36 points ahead of runner-up St. Clairsville.
