Monday's Cincinnati Reds-Los Angeles Angels game postponed; doubleheader Wednesday

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Cincinnati Reds get an unexpected day off – and a second scheduled doubleheader in a 10-day stretch – thanks to a rare weather postponement in Southern California caused by the historically rare tropical storm that hit the area over the weekend.

Monday night’s series opener between the Reds and Los Angeles Angels has been postponed by adverse field conditions left in the wake of Sunday’s storm. It is rescheduled for 9:38 p.m. (EDT) Wednesday as part of a split doubleheader, to follow the teams’ regularly scheduled game that afternoon.

The teams are now scheduled to open their three-game series Tuesday night at 9:38 p.m.

How the postponement impacts the teams’ pitching plans was not immediately clear. Graham Ashcraft was scheduled to pitch Monday for the Reds; Andrew Abbott, Tuesday.

Lyon Richardson, who made his big-league debut earlier this month, was added to the Reds’ taxi squad for this trip in anticipation of possible weather issues and postponements.

It was the second consecutive game the Angels moved because of the weekend storm, marking the first time in 40 years the Angels have had more than one weather postponement in a single season.

It’s the 19th home game in the Angels’ 62-season history to be postponed.

The tropical storm that moved through northwestern Mexico and Southern California prompted the first tropical storm warning for that part of the country by the National Weather Service in history.

As for Reds postponements and rainouts, this is the second of the month for the Reds, who had their second game in a series in Pittsburgh recently rained out, forcing a doubleheader Aug. 13; and they return home Sept. 1 for a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs prompted by a rainout in April.
