Big League Stew - MLB

Just as Cincinnati reporters had to go into the Reds clubhouse and say, "Gee whillikers, whaddya think of that?" Arizona beat reporters had to go ask the Diamondbacks about Johnny Cueto striking 10 of them out in his first major league game.

Their responses ...

• "I was like, 'OK, we'll see.' He wasn't lying." — Orlando Hudson, after being told by Ken Griffey Jr. before the game that Cueto was a 'young Pedro Martinez.'

• "He's got great stuff and he pounds the zone with it, that's what makes him effective. He's just a great pitcher.'  — Justin Upton

• "He's got great stuff. Fastball spotted to both sides. Good breaking ball, threw his change-up. He had everything." — Eric Byrnes

• "That's Jake Peavy-like, he's got that type of stuff. If he holds out (stays healthy), and I hope he does, he'll have a great career." — Hudson

By the way, Cueto is only the third pitcher in modern history to win and strike out 10 while allowing only one hit in their first start. I'm guessing Reds fans are hoping his career follows more of Juan Marichal's path (sans bat beating, of course) than Steve Woodard.
