MLB power rankings: Undefeated Tampa Bay Rays off to baseball's best start in 20 years

They are making history that spans both recent decades and long gone centuries. And no, it really doesn't matter that the Tampa Bay Rays are doing it against the dregs of the major leagues.

The Rays are off to a 9-0 start, the first club to pull that off since the 2003 Kansas City Royals, and are so thoroughly dominating opponents that they're an easy choice to top USA TODAY Sports' first regular season installment of power rankings.

Tampa Bay has not just steamrolled the Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics; the Rays' 24 home runs are the most through nine games since the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals. After outscoring the A's 31-5 in a three-game sweep, they are the only club in the live ball era (and first since the 1884 St. Louis Maroons) to win their first nine games by at least four runs.

Sure, you'll see their three opponents at or near the bottom of these rankings. But for what it's worth, the Tigers, Rays and A's are 0-9 against the Rays and 7-12 against everyone else. The Red Sox get their chance starting Monday at Tropicana Field:

This week's rankings:
