MLB playoffs: Minnesota Twins Carlos Correa reacts after surpassing Jeter, Ortiz

Carlos Correa's incredible Sunday night was even better than he could have asked for.

The Minnesota Twins' star shortstop is facing his former team, the Houston Astros, in the American League Division Series, and he's been a huge part of the Twins' success so far this postseason.

Correa has made phenomenal defensive plays throughout Minnesota's early playoff run and collecting clutch hits at the plate as well. However it was his performance in Game 2 of the series — which helped Minnesota even the ALDS at one game apiece — in particular that is the pinnacle of his playoff run thus far.

Correa went 3-4 at the plate on Sunday with a walk and three RBIs against his former team in Houston. Not only was he responsible for half of the Twins' six runs in a 6-2 victory, but he also achieved a significant milestone in the process.

His three RBIs in the game gave him a total of 63 runs batted in in the postseason, which is tied for third (with David Justice) in MLB playoff history.

Notably, Correa's 63 RBIs in the playoffs were also enough to jump over two MLB legends that had some of their biggest career moments in the postseason: Derek Jeter and David Ortiz. Heading into Sunday night, the Twins' shortstop was just one RBI behind Jeter and Ortiz (61) for a tie for fourth place on the MLB postseason RBI leaderboard.

After tying them with an RBI double off of the center field wall in the first inning, Correa surpassed the two with a big single in the fifth.

Following Correa's strong performance Sunday night, FOX Sports' Tom Verducci notified him of the accomplishment on air, and the Puerto Rican star was nearly speechless.

Carlos Correa contract

The long and winding courtship of the star shortstop was one of the biggest stories of MLB's last offseason.

Correa opened the saga by opting out of the final two years of the three-year contract he had signed with the Twins ahead of the 2022 season.

In December, he and the Giants agreed to terms on a 13-year, $350 million contract, but the deal never became final when San Francisco found reason for concern with his ankle during a final medical examination. The New York Mets attempted to seize on the opportunity, agreeing to terms with Correa on a 12-year, $315 million deal. Once again, the contract was never finalized due to similar concerns about his ankle during medical examinations.

Finally, in January of this year, the shortstop returned to Minnesota on a six-year deal worth up to $270 million.

Carlos Correa stats

During the first year of his new contract with the Twins, Correa slashed .230/.312/.399 with 18 home runs and an OPS of .711.

In all, the 2023 season brought the worst batting average of his career and lowest OPS since the 60-game 2020 season (.709). Correa also led MLB with 30 double plays grounded into during the regular season. This season was also the first full-length campaign in which the shortstop failed to hit at least 20 home runs since he hit 15 in 2018.

So far, Correa has returned to form in the playoffs, where he's currently slashing .533/.588/.733 for an OPS of 1.322 through four games. He's also showed off his impressive defensive skills on more than one occasion.
