MLB free agency predictions for Arizona Diamondbacks include Blake Snell, Justin Turner

The Arizona Diamondbacks made a surprise run to the 2023 World Series before falling short against the Texas Rangers.

The 4-1 loss to the Rangers showed some deficiencies for the team, mainly with power bats and starting pitching.

Could the team make any splashes in 2023 MLB free agency to bolster its lineup and pitching rotation for next season in those areas?

It writes: "Turner was ineligible for the qualifying offer as a player who has previously received one. His age probably keeps this to one year. He should land a similar commitment to last offseasons as one of the best bets in the class for above-average offense in 2024. The D-Backs, Padres, Cubs, Tigers, Giants, Yankees, Phillies and Marlins could all fit."

Pitcher List: Diamondbacks will add pitcher Blake Snell in MLB free agency

Sean Roberts writes: "The Diamondbacks are probably a bat and a high-level starting arm away from going from surprise Wild Card to legitimate division contender (though in fairness, this year seemed to work out ok for them as-is). Snell will probably be the second-most sought-after arm on the market after Ohtani, but Arizona has plenty of salary room to make a move to go in with their young core and has shown a willingness to surprise with some free agent signings (notably Madison Bumgarner in 2019)."

It writes: "From 2018 to ’19, Chapman had the look of a budding superstar, blending all-world defense with elite power and enough contact to reach base at a .348 clip. Since then, though, the bat has taken a step or two back, though the defense remains stellar. Add it all up, and you still get unquestionably the best third baseman in this year’s class. Chapman’s bat is better than league average, with a 110 wRC+ over the past three seasons. Factor in his durability (his 140 games last year were his fewest in a 162-game season since his rookie year), and he should be in store for a hefty payday."

It writes: "When he was a free agent last offseason, Lugo was coming off a five-year run as a productive setup man for the Mets. The right-hander prioritized a chance to compete for a rotation spot once he hit the market. He bet on himself with a two-year, $15MM guarantee from the Padres that allowed him to opt-out after the first season."

It writes: "Pederson can’t be trusted to hit a lick against lefties these days, but the two-time All-Star slashed .241/.351/.435 with 14 homers in 373 plate appearances against righties this year and can still hold down the heavy side of a DH platoon with some time in left field sprinkled in during times of desperation."

Kristen Wong writes: "The MLB journeyman didn't enjoy a super productive regular season with Arizona, but he's been killing it in the postseason. Pham, who has only been with the D-Backs for a year, arguably proved his worth in October, coming up with clutch hits week after week. He has an OPS of .800 this postseason and has three homers and four RBIs. He's not in career-best form but he doesn't have to be -- this version of Tommy Pham works great for Arizona."

Sports Illustrated: Diamondbacks will pick up starting pitcher Kyle Gibson in MLB free agency

It writes: "The journeyman Gibson has quietly been among the most durable starters in the league in recent years. Since the start of 2020, only four pitchers have made more starts than Gibson, who’s pitched for three different clubs during that span. Though reliably able to take the ball each turn through the rotation, the 36-year-old has put up some spotty results, with a 4.88 ERA over the last two years. Still, dependable arms that can eat innings are hard to come by these days, which should work in Gibson’s favor."

MLB Trade Rumors: Diamondbacks will land starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen in MLB free agency

It writes: "Lorenzen began his MLB career with six-plus seasons in Cincinnati. The Reds deployed him mostly out of the bullpen, dabbling with him as an outfielder at times. Lorenzen is no longer a two-way option but prioritized finding a rotation spot when he first hit free agency in advance of the 2022 season. He signed with the Angels and posted a 4.24 ERA through 18 starts around a shoulder strain that sidelined him for a couple months. He signed for one year and $8.5M with the Tigers last winter."

Pitcher List: Diamondbacks to add 3B Matt Chapman in MLB free agency

Sean Roberts writes: "With the departure of Evan Longoria, the Diamondbacks could use a new third baseman, and Chapman can replace the outstanding defense Longoria has flashed in the postseason and provides a decent floor offensively with his ability to get on base. Chapman and the aforementioned Snell could be two all-in moves for Arizona to set them apart."

MLB Trade Rumors: Diamondbacks to sign pitcher Jakob Junis in MLB free agency

It writes: "Junis averaged 93.7 MPH on his sinker, two ticks higher than his previous career high. He leans more often on a mid-80s slider that presents a particularly tough look for right-handed hitters. Many clubs will prefer him as a reliever thanks to the heavy reliance on the breaking ball, but it’s not out of the question he finds a team willing to let him battle for a spot at the back of a rotation. He could aim for a similar deal to those secured by Lugo and Matt Strahm."

Fantrax HQ: Diamondbacks to add starting pitcher Sonny Gray in MLB free agency

Matt Heckman writes: "Sonny Gray is not the flashiest name which is why his 2023 season is being completely overlooked. He was excellent posting a 2.79 ERA over 184 innings pitched. Arizona could use some depth in their rotation behind Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly. Plus, after a surprising run to the World Series, the team will be eager to get back in 2024. Staying in Minnesota figures to be a positive for Gray’s fantasy value if that happens."

MLB Trade Rumors: Diamondbacks to get pitcher Liam Hendricks in MLB free agency

It writes: "Hendriks now has the chance to hook on with a team with an eye on him returning to late-inning prominence in 2025. He could be of particular interest to CBT payors, since the AAV of his contract would be low."
