Mizzou quarterback-turned-defensive back Shawn Robinson enters transfer portal

One of the most versatile players on the Missouri football roster has entered the transfer portal.

Shawn Robinson, a quarterback transfer from TCU who switched to defensive back while in Columbia, will transfer out of the Tigers' program.

The program confirmed Robinson's entrance into the transfer portal Wednesday.

Robinson emerged as a defensive back over the past season-plus, recording 31 tackles and an interception in seven games during the 2021 season.

He missed five games in 2021 with an injury but returned for the Armed Forces Bowl, which proved to be his final game in a MU uniform.

In his first full season playing defense in college, Robinson said he soaked it in.

"I haven't had this much fun since high school," Robinson said during the 2021 season. "I'm just having a blast."

Robinson began the 2020 season as Missouri's starting quarterback, starting against Alabama. He threw for 185 yards and a touchdown before Connor Bazelak took over later on in the loss.

Robinson was a four-star quarterback prospect who held offers from Alabama, LSU, Texas and Baylor before choosing TCU, according to 247Sports. He transferred to Missouri in December 2018 after passing for 1,334 yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions in the 2018 season.

Robinson switched to defensive back at Missouri in late 2020 and saw his first action at defensive back in that year's regular-season finale against Mississippi State. He made his first career defensive interception in that game.

The transition to defensive back is something that wowed Missouri coaches throughout the 2021 season.

"I've been blown away by what he's been able to do and how quickly he's been able to do it," Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz said of Robinson switching to safety. "He's playing a lot of football for us, playing a lot of different positions, doing a lot of different things and still making a lot of plays with effort, technique and toughness."

It's unclear whether Robinson's future will be as a quarterback or defensive back.
