Cardinals 4, Brewers 3: Milwaukee fades after hot start, can't pick up sweep on Mother's Day
Mother's Day got off to a smashing start for the Milwaukee Brewers but it was all downhill after that.
Unable to land a knockout punch in the opening moments of Sunday's contest with the St. Louis Cardinals at American Family Field, the Brewers slowly saw a 3-0 lead whittle away into a 4-3 loss in front of a crowd of 36,865.
Paul Goldschmidt homered and later tied the game with a hit, and Michael Siani gave the Cardinals the lead with a RBI double in the seventh inning.

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas settled in nicely after allowing three runs in a 42-pitch first inning to pick up the win.
The loss prevented the Brewers from picking up the sweep, which would have been just the third four-game sweep of the Cardinals in franchise history.
St. Louis completes comeback in the seventh inning
A fourth individual tally of the day put the Cardinals in front in the seventh. Michael Siani laced a two-out double off the top of the fence in right-center, scoring Brendan Donovan from first for a 4-3 St. Louis lead. The ball was inches away from being a home run, bounding of the top of the yellow padding on the wall and back into play.
Cardinals tie the game but it could've been worse
Jared Koenig in his second inning of work allowed a trio of singles, the last of which was to Paul Goldschmidt and tied the game at 3-3. With two outs and the bases loaded, Alec Burleson floated a fly ball toward the right field line but Jackson Chourio's diving catch prevented more runs.
Paul Goldschmidt breaks drought with homer
For the first time since April 22, the slumping Paul Goldschmidt went deep. The veteran, who won the MVP award in 2022 but entered with a .530 OPS on the season, took a full-count fastball from Bryse Wilson.
Wilson was unable to get any outs in the fifth inning, leaving with a man on second and a 3-2 lead. He gave up five hits and five walks, but Koenig was able to get out of the inning a lead intact.
Meanwhile, Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas has thrown just 39 pitches over the last four innings after throwing 42 in the first.
Bryse Wilson laboring through two innings
Both starting pitchers grinded early in the ballgame. After stranding two leadoff runners in the top of the first, Bryse Wilson allowed two singles and two walks in the second but got out of the inning with just one run allowed by getting Goldschmidt to fly out to right. Wilson threw 50 pitches and just 26 strikes through two innings but held a 3-1 lead.
Brewers force Miles Mikolas to throw 42 pitches in first
The Brewers offense nearly knocked Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas out of the game in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs and forcing 42 pitches. Rhys Hoskins drew a bases-loaded walk to open the scoring, Joey Ortiz had a run-scoring groundout and Gary Sanchez made it 3-0 with a single to left.
Mikolas would have had to throw even more pitches had it not been for leftfielder Burleson throwing Hoskins out at home on Sanchez's single to end the inning. Mikolas got to two strikes on all seven batters he faced and had a full count against three of them.
