Brewers 1, Padres 0: Blake Perkins delivers 8th-inning RBI to help Milwaukee avoid sweep

On an afternoon where they mustered up hardly a whimper on offense through seven innings, the Milwaukee Brewers got a pair of bleeder base hits and it proved to be enough.

Brice Turang singled, stole second and Blake Perkins drove him in with a two-out base hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, making good on a stalwart effort from a bullpen game by the Brewers pitching staff for a 1-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday afternoon at American Family Field.

Bryse Wilson pitched 3 2/3 innings to lead it off, Bryan Hudson took over from there and went 2 1/3 innings before the trio of Elvis Peguero, Abner Uribe and Joel Payamps finished the shutout off with a scoreless inning each.

Blake Perkins gives the Brewers the lead late

The Brewers had just one hit all day coming into the eighth inning when a pair of seeing-eye singles gave them a 1-0 lead. Brice Turang floated a soft hit just over the head of third baseman Tyler Wade with one out and then stole second. Mike Shildt pulled starter Michael King after he struck out Jackson Chourio swinging and it backfired when Blake Perkins knocked a grounder through the left side off lefty Wandy Peralta. Turang beat Jurickson Profar's throw from left field home with a headfirst slide.

Abner Uribe pulls off an escape act in the eighth

Pitching for the third time in four days and after throwing 31 pitches Tuesday, Abner Uribe got the eighth inning with a thinned-out bullpen Wednesday. With his velocity down, Uribe gave up a leadoff triple to Matthew Batten but then buckled down to get out without allowing any runs to keep the scoreless tie intact. He got Kyle Higashioka to pop up on the infield, then struck out Xander Bogaerts and finished if off with a dazzling play on a Fernando Tatis Jr. infield chopper.

Willy Adames breaks up Michael King's no-hitter

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and two strikes on him, Brewers shortstop Willy Adames reached out and poked a fastball off the plate into right field for a bloop single. It was the first hit of the game for the Brewers against Padres starter Michael King.

Brewers were being no-hit by Michael King through six innings

Padres right-hander Michael King is on his game this afternoon. The only base runners he's allowed through six scoreless innings are a pair of walks in the second inning. Since then, he's retired 13 in a row and is spinning a no-hitter through six innings with eight strikeouts. King, who entered the game 2-0 with a 4.19 ERA, is at 72 pitches.

On the flip side, the Brewers' bullpen game is going as well as planned from a pitching perspective. Bryse Wilson, Bryan Hudson and Elvis Peguero haven't allowed a run through seven innings.

Scoreless through four innings

The pitching is the story early on as both staffs have held the opposition scoreless through four innings. San Diego right-hander Michael King has yet to allow a hit, while Brewers starter Bryse Wilson covered 11 outs in an abbreviated start by design before handing the ball to Bryan Hudson
