Mike Shanahan: Kirk Cousins could be traded for first-rounder
It's gotten even weirder in Washington.
Appearing on ESPN 980, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan discussed backup quarterback Kirk Cousins, who will be making the start this Sunday against the Falcons after the decision was made to bench Robert Griffin III for the rest of the year.
Speaking about Cousins' potential over the next three games, Shanahan started talking about the former Michigan State quarterback's future with the team.
“If he lights it up, hey, maybe we can bring a first-round draft choice back to this organization, and say hey, who are we gonna take in the first round,” Shanahan said, via the Washington Post. “And I think by him playing and Robert not playing, it gives us a chance to have a few options for our organization that we wouldn’t normally have, and the safety of our quarterback going into the offseason is preserved. . . . His value can only go up. It cannot go down. It can only go up.”
Obviously, no matter the coach in 2014, Griffin is the Redskins' quarterback. But openly talking about the backup's future can't bode well for someone like Cousins, who's clearly in a strange situation.
As Santana Moss said, it's as if Cousins is being set up for failure. This only further proves the point.
