Farmington football player voted Journal Star high school athlete of the week

Jack Gronewold of the Farmington football team was voted as the Journal Star athlete of the week.

Gronewold — who earned 381 of 1,546 votes — scored the game-winning touchdown in Farmington's 30-26 comeback win over Elmwood/Brimfield on Friday. He grabbed an 84-yard scoring catch with 6:36 left in the game for a lasting lead. The sophomore caught six balls for 174 yards and three TDs.

Maliek Ross, Peoria High football

Ross put together an entire game in just one half, rushing for 168 yards and three touchdowns as the Lions beat Manual, 58-0 on Friday. All of the senior running back's 22 carries came in the first two quarters. He scored from 17 and seven yards out in the first quarter, then added a 23-yard score in the second quarter.

Allison deFreese, Eureka volleyball

deFreese hit a milestone last week for the Hornets. The senior setter recorded her 1,000th career assist with 14 in a two-set win against Fisher on Thursday. She added two kills and a pair of digs as Eureka picked up its sixth Heart of Illinois Conference victory. She started her week with 22 assists last Tuesday in a two-set win over Flanagan-Cornell.

Bella Gregory, Metamora volleyball

Gregory played a big factor in helping Metamora go 4-0 last week and extend its win streak to 12 in a row. She wrapped up the week with the Redbirds sweeping Rochester and Quincy Notre Dame on Saturday. She posted 10 digs against Rochester, while the senior had 12 digs and three aces as the Redbirds had 10 aces over QND. Gregory then had six digs on Thursday to beat East Peoria. Her seven-dig match versus Limestone was part of a two-set victory last Tuesday.

Josh Weeks, Morton boys cross country

Weeks was the runner-up finisher at the East Peoria Invitational on Saturday. He ran the Illinois Central College course in 16:02.10, roughly nine seconds behind winner Caleb Mathias of Champaign Central (15:53.00). Weeks, the reigning Journal Star runner of the year, led the Potters to the team title over Washington, 80-82.

Bethany Sennett, Princeville girls cross country

Sennett was the top Class 1A girls finisher at Saturday's East Peoria Invitational. The freshman was 16th overall behind 15 Class 2A runners and covered the ICC route in 20:42.70. Princeville was sixth as a team with Washington winning thanks to placing five runners in the top 10.

Owen Adams, Morton boys golf

Adams grabbed medalist honors Thursday at the Mid-Illini Conference tournament at Washington's Quail Meadows. His 1-over-73 came off the strength of three birdies on the 10th, 14th and 18th holes. The sophomore helped the Potters (313) outdistance themselves from Dunlap (322) by nine strokes.

Sydney Hubner, Pekin girls golf

Hubner won the Mid-Illini Conference tournament by six strokes on Thursday at Pine Lakes Golf Club in Washington. The senior fired a 79 for medalist honors, giving Pekin its first league championship since 2014. Following a 90-minute rain delay, Hubner finished her round by parring the last five holes. She was joined in the top 10 by teammates Kami Jarvill (88th, fifth) and Molly Cottrell (95, tied for ninth).

Stephen Braun, Illinois Valley Central boys soccer

Braun was a solid presence in the net for the Grey Ghosts last week. The senior goalkeeper went 2-0-1 in a trio of matches including a 3-0 shutout of Pekin last Wednesday. He added six saves in last Monday's 1-1 tie with Princeton. Braun then had eight saves on Saturday to beat Tolono Unity, 3-1. The three-match unbeaten streak matches IVC's longest of the season.

Kara Hofmann, Richwoods girls swimming and diving

Hofmann was a two-event winner in Saturday's dual meet with Galesburg. She won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:06.46, while teaming with Sullivan Dare, Rita Pierz and Catalina Tyre to win the 200-yard medley relay (2:10.47). Hofmann also took second place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:23.79), then was in the runner-up 200-yard freestyle relay with Cate Lewis, Dare and Tyre in 1:56.56. The Silver Streaks won the meet, 104-81.

Shinkha Agarwal, Dunlap girls tennis

The senior was a straight-set winner last Tuesday in a Mid-Illini dual-meet with visitor Morton. She won her No. 1 singles match against Chloe Kendall of Morton, 6-0, 6-1. This was the first of six single matches the Eagles won in straight sets, taking the match, 9-0.
