Michigan football will now host Texas at Big House in 2024, with return visit in 2027

Conference changes and all, the Michigan Wolverines will host the Texas Longhorns at Michigan Stadium in 2024.

The announcement came from the U-M athletic department Tuesday morning as part of a series of non-conference football schedule moves.

For a while, it seemed as if the series may be in jeopardy after Texas agreed to join the SEC starting in 2024, but officials say the original contract has been switched and U-M will now host Texas on Sept. 7, 2024, and will return the favor with a trip to Austin for a game at Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium on Sept. 11, 2027. The series was originally announced back in 2014.

The schedule change means the Longhorns will have to face an increasingly tough and consistent U-M football program before they embark on their first season in the SEC. CBS reported in February that Oklahoma and Texas both agreed to pay early exit fees of a combined $100 million to join the SEC in 2024, a year earlier than expected.

Michigan has also added two home games with Western Michigan in 2026 and 2029, and both games are scheduled to be the season openers. The Wolverines also scheduled UTEP for 2026, meaning the non-conference schedule for that season is officially completed. The Oklahoma Sooners will travel to the Big House on Sept. 12, 2026, to play at Michigan Stadium for the first time ever.

2023 Michigan football schedule

While there are some big time matchups coming in the future, the Wolverines non-conference schedule in 2023 should be relatively stress-free.

Michigan will host East Carolina on Sept. 2 for the season opener and will play UNLV and Bowling Green in the following weeks.
