Rivals recently released its initial team recruiting rankings for the class of 2018, and Michigan checked in at No. 12 in the country.

The Wolverines have two four-stars committed in East Lansing (Mich.) High power forward Brandon Johns and Detroit East English Village point guard David Dejulius, and a three-star in Clarkston (Mich.) High power forward Taylor Currie.

Though it’s still early, the Big Ten is off to the best start of any conference in the country in the 2018 class, placing eight teams inside the top 20 — Michigan State at No. 2, Maryland at No. 5, Indiana at No. 6, Rutgers at No. 11, Michigan at No. 12, Minnesota at No. 13, Northwestern at No. 16 and Iowa at No. 19.

Rivals has adjusted the way it ranks teams this year, using an automated formula. Here’s what their write-up said:

“For the first time, we’ve automated our team rankings in basketball. The formula is pretty simple. Points are assigned to each recruit depending on where they are ranked and then the totals for all of a team's commitments are totaled. The higher a recruit is ranked – the maximum value is 1,500 points for the No. 1 player in the country – the more weight his commitment holds.”

Though a long shot, Michigan’s class would get a major boost if it landed Montverde (Fla.) Montverde Academy five-star small forward R.J. Barrett, who is rated as the No. 1 player in the country. He recently included the Wolverines in his top five, along with Arizona, Duke, Kentucky and Oregon.
