The Miami Dolphins current backfield is a lot like the rest of the team’s roster. A lot of talent that has yet to completely show itself on the field. With the current depth at the position, I may be seen as crazy for even attempting to recommend this signing, but I do believe that the Miami Dolphins should sign free agent running back Karlos Williams.

A former Buffalo Bill, Williams was released by Buffalo earlier in the offseason following multiple issues including being overweight and a four game suspension for a drug violation. However, there is still value to be had from Williams, a player many believed to be on the rise after he scored seven rushing touchdowns last season.

Possessing some speed, Williams is mostly classified as a power back given his strength. The former FSU star would be the perfect backup plan to Arian Foster or Jay Ajayi should either go down with injury. Yes, I do know neither are injured now — though Foster is being limited in practice — but this move could be seen as cautionary in nature.

I also admit that the scheme and ideology of head coach Adam Gase may not fit Williams’ style. Gase likes running backs that can play every down. Williams is more of a goal line or short yardage specialist, and a good one at that given the form he showed as a member of the Buffalo Bills.

Why am I so high on Williams? Well, arguably he is one of the better touchdown running backs in this league. When he get’s the ball near the goal line, he has a nose for the end zone. Despite his recent issues, it may be worth it for the Miami Dolphins to take a flyer on Williams and at least bring him in for a workout.

The other reason is my distrust in a healthy Arian Foster. While we do have Jay Ajayi, I firmly believe we are better off having a two running back system. Should Foster go down with injury, Ajayi would be forced into a role where he is the only running back for the majority of the game as Kenyan Drake is not yet ready for a regular role.

With Karlos Williams as a wild card, the Miami Dolphins would have another weapon at their disposal in the run game. Something you can never have to much of.
