Miami Dolphins must prioritize new deal for Jarvis Landry

The first real piece of the current Miami Dolphins success has always been Jarvis Landry. Coming in as a second round selection back in 2014, Landry has been a playmaker ever since he arrived on South Beach. Though his arrival did not receive the most fan fair, Landry proved from the get go that he is one of the league’s best young receivers.

Playing as a slot man in the Miami Dolphins offense, I have never seen a receiver play with so much intensity on every play. Always choosing to try and extend the play as much as he can, Landry’s explosiveness and toughness has made him a favorite among both the Dolphins fan base and experts across the league. While his on field attitude has drawn the ire of some, it is that never surrender attitude which makes him great.

Even before the arrival of Adam Gase, Jarvis Landry was producing. Even before Ryan Tannehill finally showed some improvement, Landry was breaking big plays and becoming a top receiver in this league. In truth, Landry could be seen as the player that helped begin the amazing turnaround that is underway in Miami.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, the Miami Dolphins and Jarvis Landry have had a great ride so far. Recording a combined 288 receptions, 3,051-yards, and 14 touchdowns over his first three years, Landry is this team’s most valuable player. While the Dolphins have some big fish to fry this offseason in terms of contracts, the main priority should be getting Landry locked down to a new deal.

Undoubtedly in for a massive pay raise, the Miami Dolphins must do everything in their power to prevent Landry from hitting free agency next offseason. A player of his caliber cannot be allowed to test the open market, especially for a growing team like the Miami Dolphins.

While players like Kenny Stills and Andre Branch look to be the most important free agents for the Miami Dolphins to re-sign, the team must keep their eyes on the prize. Though both are important players, neither can match Jarvis Landry. If it comes down to it, I would rather see the team focus on signing Landry to an extension over some players from the current class.
