Following the Miami Dolphins third preseason game last Thursday against the Atlanta Falcons, the Miami coaching staff knew they had some tough decisions ahead of them. With roster cuts looming the Dolphins coaching staff decided to waive ten players while also giving one their outright release.

Of the players released, three were wide receivers. Given that the wide receiver depth chart was basically set from the outset of training camp with Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker, and Kenny Stills all starting this season, some of these releases were not out of the blue. Those now waived are Brandon Shippen, Matt Hazel, and A.J. Cruz.

Other offensive players seeing their names listed on the waiver wire this week are offensive lineman Ruben Carter, guard Vinston Painter, and tight end Gabe Hughes. None of the above players played a major impact during the preseason and their release is not that unexpected given their lack of overall skill.

On the defensive side of the ball, the most notable release for folks in the Miami area is that of Akil Blount. The undrafted free agent out of Florida A&M was a Miami native and did have some solid performances late in preseason game when called upon. Again though, his release is not that unexpected.

What may be unexpected is that both undrafted free agents James Burgess and Tyler Gray are still currently on the roster. That said, when the roster is cut down from 75 to 53-players next week, Burgess and Gray should be part of the casualties. However, I do believe that both will have a good shot at making the Miami Dolphins practice squad.

Other defensive players that were waived from the roster was cornerback Al Louis-Jean while fellow corner Brandon Harris was given his outright release from the roster. Both these moves come on the heels of Miami’s current battle ongoing at the cornerback position. Neither look able to compete for a starting or backup job which was the likely cause behind there release.

Special teams also saw a couple player be cut from the roster as long snapper Ryan DiSalvo and kicker Marshall Koehn were also put on waivers. The moves basically guarantee a starting position for second-year kicker Andrew Franks and veteran long snapper John Denney.
