Who is starting for the Mets?

Carlos Carrasco takes the ball for the Mets in the series opener.

The right-hander, who has struggled for most of this season, is coming off one of his best starts of the year to close out the first-half thanks to a new slider grip learned from a Pablo Lopez Instagram post.

Carrasco shut out the Diamondbacks over eight innings of three-hit ball while striking out four in the 9-0 win. That snapped a five-start winless streak and marked just the second time he pitched into the seventh inning.

He now has a 5.16 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 43 strikeouts through 12 starts.

Who is starting for the White Sox?

On the other side of things, the Mets will have to deal with White Sox ace Lucas Giolito.

After struggling last season, the right-hander has been putting together a strong year. He’s pitched to a 3.44 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 117 strikeouts through 19 starts. Eleven of those outings have been quality starts.

Giolito is coming off a solid start against the Cardinals in which he allowed just two runs on two hits while striking out five. He's posted five quality starts across seven outings since the beginning of June.

The former first-round pick, who was originally drafted by the Nationals, has faced the Mets three times in his career. He has a 3.07 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts in those three outings.

Upcoming schedule

The Mets and White Sox continue their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:10 p.m. on SNY.

Justin Verlander (3-5, 3.72 ERA), bumped up one day to start, will face off with former Brave Touki Toussaint (0-2, 3.38 ERA).
