Mets re-signing RHP Adam Ottavino to one-year deal

The Mets have made an addition to their bullpen, bringing back right-hander Adam Ottavino on a one-year deal worth $4.5 million, SNY's Andy Martino has confirmed.

Martino recently reported that David Stearns was prioritizing adding one or two relievers to the mix prior to spring training, and he's begun to accomplish that with the Otto reunion.

Ottavino spent each of the past two seasons as a relatively reliable set-up man and fill-in closer in New York's bullpen, posting a 2.62 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 519 strikeouts, and 15 saves in 132 appearances.

After a career-best 2022 campaign, the veteran took a step back last season, but he still posted a solid 3.21 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 62 strikeouts over 61.2 innings and 66 appearances.

Ottavino declined his $6.75M player option at the beginning of this offseason, allowing him to hit free agency, but now he returns to the Big Apple for less money.

The 39-year-old not only has familiarity with the organization, but he also spent time with new manager Carlos Mendoza during his days with the Yankees.

Star closer Edwin Diaz will be back in the mix after missing all of last season due to a knee injury, so Otto figures to slot back into his usual set-up man role alongside lefty Brooks Raley in the later innings.

With the rest of the bullpen being a bit of a question mark, Stearns could certainly look to add another reliable arm to the mix over the next few weeks.

Some of the top free agent relievers remaining include righties Ryne StanekPhil Maton, and Ryan Brasier and LHP Wandy Peralta.
