Mets owner Steve Cohen unveils $8 billion proposal to build up area around Citi Field

Mets owner Steve Cohen has been talking about building up the area around Citi Field since he purchased the ball club back in 2020, and on Tuesday, his proposal was officially unveiled.

Cohen revealed his proposal for an $8 billion, 50-acre investment, which he is calling "Metropolitan Park."

This plan would add year-round entertainment to the area, and bring many amenities including a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, restaurants, bars, and a live music venue to the area around the ballpark.

It also calls for public park space, community athletic fields, and playgrounds that would help create new connections to the waterfront and surrounding areas.

"It’s time the world’s greatest city got the sports and entertainment park it deserves," Cohen said in a news release. "When I bought this team, fans and the community kept saying we needed to do better. Metropolitan Park delivers on the promise of a shared space that people will not only want to come to and enjoy, but can be truly proud of."

According to the release, "the project’s Queens-focused comprehensive design seamlessly addresses community priorities, climate resilience, and economic needs."

Said Thomas J. Grech, President & CEO of the Queens Chamber of Commerce:

"Queens has long deserved a space that brings everything together – new green space, 365-day-per-year entertainment, better connectivity and a real job creator in the area around Citi Field. No other project has done so much work to truly partner with the community. And it’s this bottom-up approach that gives everyone a voice right from the beginning that works."
