Mets' Francisco Alvarez named NL Rookie of the Month for July

Jul 5, 2023; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez celebrates with teammates after taking the lead in the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Mets rookie catcher Francisco Alvarez was named the National League Rookie of the Month for his torrid play in July.

Alvarez finished the month with eight home runs and 16 RBI while slashing .275/.351/.623 with a .974 OPS in 20 games.

The 21-year-old’s fantastic July came on the heels of a rough June, one that coincided with the team’s own failures, where he slashed .151/.205/.329 and had just four homers in 24 games.

However, Alvarez kept his July hot streak going and kicked off the month of August with a bang, finishing 2-for-5 with a go-ahead, two-run shot in the 10th inning on Tuesday night.

Overall this season, the Venezuela native has 21 home runs – which leads all MLB catchers – and 44 RBI. He’s also set the franchise record for most home runs by a rookie catcher, surpassing the previous record of 13.
