MetroWest Fantastic Five High School Athletes from Tuesday, September 5, 2023

Even if summer is still in the air, the fall sports season has begun and the results are rolling in, starting with golf action. Who has started hot and who still needs more time to get going? Who will be the teams to watch out for not only in September but into November?

OK, let's begin with the here and now. Who were the best of the best from Tuesday, September 5, 2023? Let's look at our Fantastic Five (plus a couple):

CHRISTIAN CHIPLOCK, Medway boys soccer

The senior captain Chiplock scored two goals, sophomore Alex Stott had a goal and an assist and juniors Charlie Weafer and Brady Girard collected assists as the host Mustangs won their opener over Norton, 3-1.

FEDERICO ROSSI, Hopkinton boys soccer

The senior forward Rossi scored two goals as the Hillers won their opener over host Ashland, 3-2.

KAITLYN SHANAHAN, Dover-Sherborn girls soccer

The sophomore Shanahan scored four goals, junior Sara Worcester scored two and sophomore Emma Motley had two goals as the Raiders opened with a 10-0 thrashing of Bellingham. Senior Emma Williams and sophomore Alexis Weiss shared the shutout in net.

AVA VANBUSKIRK, Marlborough girls soccer

The senior sensation VanBuskirk scored both goals as the Panthers outlasted Wachusett in the opener, 2-1.

PARKER WINN, Hopkinton golf

The junior Winn carded a 1-under 32 as the Hillers (2-0) edged host Holliston (0-1) on Tuesday, 228-244. For Holliston, Arav Prajapati led the way with a 5-over 38.

BOYS SOCCER

HOLLISTON 6, Norwood 0: Junior Declan Donagher scored the first two goals of the match as the Panthers blanked the host Mustangs in the opener.

HUDSON 9, South Lancaster Academy 0: Junior Luiz Silva scored two goals with an assist as the Hawks blanked South Lancaster Academy. “It was a great team effort today and great first win of the season,” said Hudson coach Jeff Ponte. “The team is motivated and ready for the season.”

MARLBOROUGH 4, Wachusett 2: Stiven Virula had two goals and one assist, Everton Araujo collected one goal and one assist and Isaac Meireles scored one goal to propel the Panthers in the opener for both teams. Jake Kristolaitis netted both goals for the host Mountaineers.

NEWTON SOUTH 2, Natick 1: Sophomore Luke Dougherty scored the goal for Natick in a season-opening, non-league loss to Newton South.

ST. JOHN’S (SHREWSBURY) 3, Algonquin 1: Will Baltas, Daniel Lau and Adrian Sobczak scored to boost the Pioneers in Northborough. Zach Ruthfield had an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute for the Titans.

TRI-COUNTY 3, South Shore Vocational 0: Junior goalkeeper Nate Howard made 10 saves as the Cougars won their opener over South Shore Vocational.

GIRLS SOCCER

HOLLISTON 4, Norwood 0: Sophomore goalie Keira Lucas earned the shutout in net, while juniors Kaylee MacDonald, Ainsley Donagher and Paige Kuchman and senior Kaitlin O'Connell all scored in the season-opening shutout win over the Mustangs.

HOPKINTON 2, Ashland 0: Maddie Recupero controlled the midfield and created opportunities as the Hillers won their opener over the Clockers.

PARKER CHARTER 2, Assabet 0: Bontu Piazza and Savannah Kuleisis scored in the first half and Sarah Rogers and Gretchen Langhoff combined for the shutout as the host Panthers blanked the Aztecs.

FIELD HOCKEY

ALGONQUIN 2, Minnechaug 0: Wyley Horner scored and Meredith Wu picked up the assists and Taylor Mieth tacked on an unassisted goal as the Titans earned a road win to open the year. Anna Belville earned the shutout behind a solid defense of Annie Harwich and Courtney Shifrin.

LEOMINSTER 3, Blackstone Valley Tech 0: Abby Kelly netted two goals, Taylor Boulay also scored and Kailyn Cuddahy earned the shutout for the Blue Devils against the Beavers.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

ALGONQUIN 3, Minnechaug 1: Caroline Macaulay (7 kills, 5 aces), Katy O’Connell (7 kills, 5 blocks) Cam Arcona (11 assists, 3 aces) and Julianna Zimmer (16 digs 4 aces) powered the visiting Titans. Set scores were 21-25, 25-3, 25-10, 25-13.

BLACKSTONE VALLEY TECH 3, AMSA 0: Senior captain and outside hitter Emma Shum had five aces and one kill, while classmate right side hitter Danika Kirby added three kills and a block and junior middle hitter Lauren Gronta added 3 kills, 1 ace and 1 block to help the host Beavers sweep the Eagles in the opener for both teams. Set scores were 25-14, 25-20 and 25-22. AMSA senior Bella Rand had seven kills, four aces and 14 digs.

HOPEDALE 3, South Lancaster 2: Phoebe Carroll (17 kills), Olivia Barroso (34 assists), Danielle Araujo (13 aces) and Mia Casey (8 kills) helped the host Blue Raiders rally to beat the Crusaders. Set scores were 25-20, 18-25, 23-25, 25-21 and 15-11.

LINCOLN-SUDBURY 3, Shrewsbury 1: Mackenzie Crandall led all hitters with 14 kills on 34 attempts and added 14 digs, Lucy Marderosian led the team with 27 digs and added two aces, and Gracie Hester led the team in assists with 13 and added 15 digs in a season-opening road loss for the Colonials.

NATICK 3, Milford 0: The Redhawks swept the Scarlet Hawks to open the season.

TRI-COUNTY 3, Nashoba Valley Tech 0: Freshman Delia LeBlanc led the Cougars going in a nine-point service run in set one, ending the day with 15 service points (7 service aces) and 13 assists as the Cougars swept Nashoba Valley Tech, 25-8, 25-13, 25-13. Junior Haley Kunick went on a nine-point service run in set three, ending the day with 14 service points and five aces, and senior Ava Cossette had 13 digs and 12 service points.

GOLF

AMSA 167, Keefe Tech 187: Senior captain Casey Matijevic shot a 4-over 39 at Southborough Golf Club to lead the host Eagles (1-1) past the Broncos. Classmate and co-captain Andrew McCabe carded a 40 for AMSA.

ALGONQUIN 207, Leominster 221: Brennan Rice carded 2-over 38 to help the Titans (2-0) top the Blue Devils (0-1) at Juniper Hill. Leominster's Luke Grebinar shot 1-over to earn medalist honors.

BLUE HILLS 9, Tri-County 0: Senior Brady O'Connor shot 8-over and lost his match by one hole to highlight the Cougars’ day vs. Blue Hills.

DOVER-SHERBORN 208, Natick 216: Grand Mayer, Charlie Potter and Tim Hill each shot an even-par 32 as the Raiders (2-0) won a non-league match over Natick.

HOPEDALE 33, Shepherd Hill 21: CJ Kivlehan carded 3-over 39 to lift the Blue Raiders in Dudley.

HUDSON 42.5, Tahanto 11.5: Riley O'Sullivan shot 4-over 40 at Cyprian Keyes in Boylston as the Hawks (1-1) defeated the Stags (0-1).

NASHOBA 195, Westborough 199: Troy Gregg shot 2-under 34 as the Wolves (2-0) edged the Rangers (0-1) at Westborough GC.
