Memphis Grizzlies collapse late, remain winless after overtime loss to Trail Blazers

Well, at least it was close.

The Memphis Grizzlies were blown out by the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night, and the NBA’s only winless team came into Portland desperate to get its first win in a game that also doubled as the opener for the in-season tournament.

That didn't happen, and it wasn't pretty. The Grizzlies fell apart in the game's final minutes, ultimately falling 115-113 in overtime to a Blazers team that was missing Anfernee Simons and Scott Henderson.

The Grizzlies (0-6) led late in the fourth quarter but couldn’t make enough plays down the stretch. They led by 10 with three and a half minutes to play, but the Blazers (3-3) made a run in the final minutes and tied it late. Luke Kennard’s shot was blocked at the buzzer, and the game went to overtime.

Portland’s 3-point shooting was the difference in the extra frame. Jerami Grant hit a three with 39 seconds left to play that gave the Blazers a four-point lead, and the home team held on for a win.

It was an impressive performance from Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane, who scored 33 points to lead all scorers. But the Grizzlies struggled when he went to the bench, and ultimately couldn’t string enough plays together down the stretch to hold on for the win.

Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins decided to shake up the starting lineup, inserting forward David Roddy instead of center Xavier Tillman Sr. That left the brunt of rebounding work to Jackson, who was matched up with NBA rebounding leader Deandre Ayton.

Ayton was in foul trouble in the second half and finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Grant led the Blazers with 26 points.

Overtime

1:17 left: Sharpe hits a step-back three to give the Blazers a three-point lead after Jackson tied it for Memphis.

3:00 left: Ayton scores the first points of overtime to give the Blazers a lead.

Fourth quarter

END OF REGULATION: Grizzlies 102, Blazers 102. Luke Kennard's shot was blocked by Shaedon Sharpe as time expired, and this game is headed to overtime.

5:41 left: Bane picked up his fifth foul on a push-off offensive foul. Jenkins challenged the call and it was overturned, so Bane only has four fouls and the Grizzlies lead by seven.

6:55 left: The Grizzlies survived the minutes with Bane on the bench and have a three-point lead. Jaren Jackson Jr. came up big at the start of the fourth quarter, with key plays on defense and two three-pointers. He's 4-of-7 from deep in the game.

Third quarter

END of 3: Grizzlies 77, Blazers 76. Bane is trying to will the Grizzlies to a win. Both teams went back in forth in the third, but the Grizzlies ended up on top. Bane has 22, and Grant has 18 to pace the Blazers. It's been close throughout, and both teams will have their shot in the final 12 minutes.

0:06 left: The mandatory timeout didn't come until just before the end of the quarter. Bane picked up his fourth foul with 3:18 to play, but Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins decided to leave him in the game.

7:04 left: The Grizzlies went ahead, and then the Blazers came back and are again up by one. Jerami Grant has come alive offensively for the Blazers.

Halftime: Blazers 54, Grizzlies 53

The Grizzlies opened up a nine point lead early in the second quarter, but the Blazers came back and maximized Bane's minutes on the bench. Bane has been the best player on the floor and Memphis really struggled without him. How will Taylor Jenkins manage those minutes in the second half?

Bismack Biyombo is on the Grizzlies bench but has not entered the game. Jenkins has gone with a 10-man rotation of the starters plus Xavier Tillman Sr., Luke Kennard, John Konchar, Jacob Gilyard and Vince Williams Jr.

Both teams have reeled off runs and grabbed momentum. Ayton hit a midrange jumper with a few seconds left in the half to give the Blazers the lead at the half, but this game is there for the taking.

Second quarter

4:24 left: Blazers have fought back and trail by seven. Bane leads all scorers with 18 points and also has five rebounds and three assists.

6:49 left: Memphis has taken control of the game with its defense. A 13-0 run to start the second quarter gave the Grizzlies a lead, and now they lead by nine as Portland takes another timeout.

9:27 left: Grizzlies came out for the second quarter and locked in defensively. They took the lead with an 8-0 run, and Desmond Bane has it going offensively. He hit a pull-up three-pointer to give the Grizzlies the lead and has 13 in the game.

First quarter

END OF 1: Blazers 33, Grizzlies 26.

3:10 left: The Blazers extended their lead to six. Tillman and Luke Kennard were the first two off the Grizzlies' bench. Blazers are 4-for-7 on three-pointers, while the Grizzlies are just 2-for-9.

6:17 left: The Grizzlies came out with some intensity and took an early lead, but the Blazers came back and have the lead at the first timeout. Deandre Ayton, the NBA's leading rebounder, already has five rebounds less than six minutes into the game. That'll be something to watch as Jaren Jackson Jr. started at center and David Roddy took Xavier Tillman's spot in the starting lineup.
