Meet the nominees for Press-Citizen's Athletes of the Week, May 6-12

This past week saw several Iowa City area track and field athletes have strong performances in district competition and earn spots at the state meet, which will run from May 16-18 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

High school tennis and golf players are gearing up for the final stages of their respective seasons while soccer nears its postseason.

Here are the nominees for the Iowa City Press-Citizen’s high school Athletes of the Week for May 6-12. Press-Citizen.com readers vote to decide this week’s winners. Voting closes at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Players are listed in alphabetical order by last name:

Alli Clark, Sr., Regina Catholic

Clark had the scoring touch during Regina’s 5-0 win over West Branch on May 6.

She scored two goals to lead the Regals to their seventh win of the season.

Brooklyn Lee, Soph., Clear Creek Amana

Lee added to her impressive high school resume at the WaMaC Super Meet at Gardner Golf Course on May 6.

She won first place by shooting an 80 for Solon.

Hannah Longmire, Soph., Iowa City West

Longmire turned in a strong performance at the Class 4A state qualifying meet at Iowa City High on May 9.

She earned state qualifying medals in the 100-meter para, 200-meter para, 400-meter para and 800-meter para.

Maclayne Menzel, Sr., Iowa City High

Menzel did a little bit of everything in Iowa City High’s 10-0 shutout over Dubuque Senior on May 6.

The fourth-year Little Hawk found the back of the net three times and earned three assists to add to her scoring.

Elizabeth Timmerman, Soph., Clear Creek Amana

Timmerman was a big part of CCA’s runner-up team finish at the Class 3A state qualifying meet at Mount Pleasant on May 9.

Individually, she became an automatic state qualifier with a first-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 10 inches. She also placed second in the 200 meters and was part of the 4x200 relay team that finished second.

Boys

Abhay Anil, Jr., Iowa City High

Anil punched his ticket to state tennis with a big win at districts on May 8.

The third-year Little Hawk earned a singles title with a win in straight sets against Ankeny to advance to the state meet.

Caleb Bock, Jr., Solon

Bock earned a first-place finish at the Class 3A state qualifying meet at Solon.

The third-year Spartan earned gold in the long jump with a personal record of 22 feet, 6.75 inches.

Keegan Decker, Fr., Liberty

Decker had a well-rounded performance for Liberty at the Class 4A state qualifying meet on May 9.

Individually, Decker placed first in the 3200 meters with a time of 9:22.81. He also placed seventh in the 800 meters.

Jacob Gilliam, Sr., Iowa City West

Gilliam helped the Trojans earn a 4-1 win over Dubuque Hempstead on May 7.

The fourth-year goalkeeper had five saves against the No. 12 team in Class 4A. His performance helped push the Trojans to 15-1 on the season.

Aren Schlemme, Soph., Clear Creek Amana

Schlemme won the the long jump and 110-meter hurdles at the Class 3A state qualifying meet on May 9.

Individually, he jumped 22 feet, .5 inches in the long jump and won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.78. He was also a part of the 4x100 and 1600 medley relay team that advanced to the state meet.
