Meet the 2023 Lone Star Varsity baseball Super Team

FIRST TEAM

Isaac Garza, Sr., Plainview, pitcher

The District 3-5A MVP, Garza went 7-1 with a 2.37 ERA over 62 innings. He made the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 5A all-state elite team, notching 78 strikeouts and walking 26. Garza batted .424 with a .500 on-base percentage, hitting six doubles, a triple and eight home runs. He totaled 39 RBI and 21 runs.

Hudson Hutcheson, Jr., Frenship, catcher

Hutcheson hit .368 with a .462 OBP, tallying 43 hits and 22 RBI. That included five doubles, a triple and a home run for the District 2-6A champions.

Tate Hendley, Jr., Idalou, first baseman

Hendley earned District 2-3A MVP after leading the Wildcats to the league title. He had a .367 batting average with 29 hits, including four doubles and a triple. He tallied 22 RBI, 24 runs and eight stolen bases. On the mound, Hendley was 5-2 with three saves in 38⅔ innings. He had a 1.81 ERA with 69 strikeouts and 21 walks.

Cross Stephens, Sr., Monterey, second baseman

Stephens batted .427 with a .485 OBP. He notched six doubles, four triples, two home runs, 17 RBI and 37 runs. He had a .921 fielding percentage.

Logan Addison, Jr., New Home, third baseman

Addison was THSBCA second-team all state and the District 4-2A pitcher of the year, going 8-1 with a 2.48 ERA and 67 strikeouts over 31 innings. He also hit .421 with a .548 OBP and 1.29 OPS. Addison had 16 doubles, seven triples, two home runs, 46 RBI and 57 runs in helping the Leopards back to the state tournament.

Logan Lassiter, Sr., Olton, shortstop

The District 3-2A MVP, Lassiter batted .500 with 55 hits, including 15 doubles, four triples and two home runs. He totaled 47 RBI and 38 runs. He went 8-0 on the mound with a 1.96 ERA and 65 strikeouts.

Erick Estrada, Sr., Denver City, outfielder

The Mustangs' lone senior, Estrada had a .511 batting average, .553 OBP and .936 slugging percentage. He tallied 14 doubles, four triples, 40 RBI and 25 stolen bases. His fielding percentage was .975.

Joel Peña, Sr., Levelland, outfielder

A THSBCA all-state first-teamer, Peña tallied 51 hits, 27 RBI and 38 runs with a .573 batting average. He also posted a .642 OBP and 1.53 OPS.

Bax Townsend, Sr., Lubbock Christian, outfielder

Townsend batted .495 with a .545 OBP. He notched 49 hits, 29 RBI and 36 runs. He also had a .952 fielding percentage.

Brody Emert, Sr., New Home, utility

With starts at multiple positions, Emert hit .443 with a .524 OBP and 1.30 OPS. He tallied 54 hits, including nine doubles, eight triples and five home runs. Emert finished with 45 RBI and 50 runs.

SPARKS OFF THE BENCH

Nick Blevins, Sr., Frenship, pitcher

Blevins went 8-1 with a 1.88 ERA over 63 innings. He totaled 61 strikeouts and 20 walks.

Brandt Carter, Sr., Shallowater, first baseman

Carter batted .505 with a .624 OBP and 1.34 OPS. He had 52 hits, including 13 doubles, three triples and a home run. He tallied 27 RBI, 59 runs and 14 stolen bases.

Brooks Carter, Sr., Shallowater, pitcher/shortstop

A THSBCA all-state elite team pick, Carter threw 65⅔ innings, going 4-1 with a 3.09 ERA and 71 strikeouts. He also had a .966 fielding percentage. Carter hit .474 with a .623 OBP and 1.49 OPS. He had 17 doubles, a triple, six home runs, 50 RBI, 41 runs and five stolen bases.

John Curry, Sr., Coronado, pitcher/outfielder

Curry received THSBCA second-team all-state honors after batting .412 with a .540 OBP and .608 slugging percentage. He notched 40 hits, including three doubles, five triples and two home runs. He tallied 22 RBI, 30 runs and 12 stolen bases. Curry also pitched 21 innings, converting all five save opportunities. He had a 3.00 ERA with 35 strikeouts.

Landon Hutcheson, Jr., Frenship, outfielder

Hutcheson, a second-team all-state pick, had a .357 batting average and .438 OBP. He tallied 45 hits, including 13 doubles, six triples and four home runs. He finished with 32 RBI and 44 runs.

Jackson Raines, Sr., New Home, outfielder

Raines hit .460 with a .570 OBP and 1.25 OPS. His 57 hits included 13 doubles and seven triples. He had 35 RBI and 60 runs.

SECOND TEAM

Brooks Roberson, Jr., Frenship, pitcher

Roberson earned second-team all-state recognition after throwing 54⅓ innings, going 6-3 with a 1.93 ERA. He tallied 68 strikeouts and 24 walks.

Santana Martinez, Jr., Estacado, catcher

Martinez had a .419 batting average, .559 OBP and 1.19 OPS. He notched 34 hits, including six doubles, five triples and a home run. Martinez drove in 28 runs.

A.J. Phergson, Sr., Estacado, first baseman

A THSBCA second-team all-state selection, Phergson hit .446 with a .606 OBP and 1.19 OPS. His 33 hits included seven doubles, three triples and a home run. He notched 28 RBI, 33 runs, 30 walks and 10 stolen bases.

Derek Cantu, Jr., Idalou, second baseman

The district defensive MVP, Cantu batted .345 with 30 hits. That included seven doubles, two triples and a home run. He notched 19 RBI, 25 runs and four stolen bases.

Easton Stewart, Jr., Snyder, third baseman

Stewart was a THSBCA second-team all-state selection and district MVP after batting .375 with a .500 OBP and .500 slugging percentage. He had four doubles, two triples, 15 RBI, 21 runs and seven stolen bases. His fielding percentage was .922.

Josiah Gonzales, Sr., Lubbock-Cooper, shortstop

Gonzales notched 48 hits while batting .358 with a .463 OBP. He finished with five doubles, two triples, 28 RBI and 26 runs.

C.J. Anzley, Sr., Slaton, outfielder

Anzley batted .442 with 34 hits. He totaled nine doubles, four triples, four home runs, 20 RBI and 34 runs. He had a .968 fielding percentage, committing one error.

Cutter Douglas, Sr., Lubbock-Cooper, outfielder

A first-team all-district selection, Douglas hit .311 with a .431 OBP. His 42 hits included 13 doubles, two triples and three home runs. He totaled 38 RBI and 25 runs.

Chris Salazar, Sr., Shallowater, outfielder

Salazar made the THSBCA all-state second team after hitting .450 with a .504 OBP and 1.25 OPS. He had 50 hits, including eight doubles, two triples and seven home runs. He tallied 54 RBI and 33 runs. As a pitcher, Salazar went 6-1 with a 3.92 ERA and 79 strikeouts over 50 innings.

Clayton Vincent, So., Shallowater, utility

Vincent earned district newcomer of the year after batting .402 with 41 hits. He also had a .523 OBP and .984 OPS. He totaled three doubles, a home run, 24 RBI, 42 runs and nine stolen bases.

SPARKS OFF THE BENCH

Cade Larson, Jr., Lubbock Christian, pitcher/first baseman

Larson went 10-3 with a 2.62 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 72 innings. He had a .465 batting average and .596 OBP, tallying 33 hits. He finished with 15 RBI and 24 runs. Larson's fielding percentage was .987.

Seth Mayberry, Fr., Plainview, outfielder

The district newcomer of the year, Mayberry hit .386 with a .446 OBP. He had two doubles, four triples, 23 RBI and 27 runs.

Ty Nuttall, Jr., Snyder, pitcher

The district pitcher of the year, Nuttall went 7-3 with a 1.84 ERA. He notched 48 strikeouts in 57 innings.

Cooper Ross, Sr., Idalou, third baseman

Ross batted .451 with 37 hits. He totaled 11 doubles, two home runs, 22 RBI, 28 runs and four stolen bases.

Luke Schulte, Sr., Nazareth, catcher

Schulte was the district MVP with a .406 batting average and .529 OBP. He notched 17 RBI, 37 runs and 13 stolen bases for the state semifinalists. He also caught 13 runners stealing.

Ja'Marcus Smith, Jr., Monterey, pitcher/third baseman

Smith went 5-3 with a 2.39 ERA, 50 strikeouts and 10 walks over 52⅓ innings. He had a .901 fielding percentage with 18 assists and 64 putouts.
