Meet the 2023-24 Post Bulletin All-Area Girls Basketball Team

Mar. 26—School: Mayo

Year: Senior

Position: Center

2023-24 stats: 18.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, 1.6 blocks per game.

Why she made the team: Miller was an absolute handful for teams to deal with all season. At 6-feet-2 and extremely strong, Miller constantly drew double and triple teams. Still, that didn't stop her from averaging 18.1 points and 11.9 rebounds and shooting 60% from the field. Miller and Goodhue's Elisabeth Gadient (Post Bulletin Player of the Year) were the two most impactful players in southeastern Minnesota. Miller, who was honorable-mention All-State this season, will play next year at Division I University of South Carolina Upstate.

School: Goodhue

Year: Senior

Position: Guard

2023-24 stats: 24 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, 1.5 blocks per game. Also, 104 made 3-pointers.

Why she made the team: Gadient is our Post Bulletin All-Area Girls Basketball Player of the Year. A third-year starter and two-time All-State player, Gadient is also a top-six finalist for the state's Miss Basketball award. The Minnesota State University, Mankato commit checks every box on both ends of court. Gadient's best production came in her team's biggest games. That included in the Class 1A state championship when she had 31 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals as Goodhue won the title.

School: Austin

Year: Junior

Position: Guard

2023-24 stats: 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.7 steals, 3 assists per game. Shot 51% on 2-pointers.

Why she made the team: Agwa was a scoring sensation much of the year. In a two-game stretch, the junior guard scored 40 points and then backed it up with a 51-point game. Agwa finished with 602 points this season. But she was far more than just a scorer, as her 6.7 rebounds, 4.7 steals and 3 assists per game attest.

School: Byron

Year: Junior

Position: Guard

2023-24 stats: 17.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 3.2 steals per game.

Why she made the team: Harvey is a do-it-all player who led her team to a robust 24-5 record and a No. 5 ranking in Class 3A. Harvey is explosive off the dribble and in the open court. She's also a tough defender and rebounder, collecting almost five boards per game. She recently committed to Division I University of North Dakota.

School: Winona Cotter

Year: Junior

Position: Guard/forward.

2023-24 stats: 22.2 points, 73 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 3.7 steals per game.

Why she made the team: The 5-11 Sauer does almost everything well. That includes being among the fastest and strongest girls basketball players in southeastern Minnesota. Sauer can play inside or outside and has an ability to blow past defenders and get to the hoop or pull up from 3-point range. Sauer constantly draws double teams. She's also a top defender and rebounder.

School: Mayo

Year: Eighth grade

Position: Guard

2023-24 statistics: 16 points, 4 assists, 4.3 steals per game.

Why she made the team: It's not often an eighth grader lands on this list. But Mills, a point guard who has the look of a future Division I player, is already there. Mills is among the better players already in southeastern Minnesota just in terms of physical stuff, such as speed and quickness. Add to that a skill level that is well beyond her years and you've got a special player. Mills handles the ball well, drives it well and shoots it well. She hit 49% from the field this year, including 34% on 3-pointers.

School: Winona

Year: Freshman

Position: Guard

2023-24 statistics: 16.7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals per game.

Why she made the team: Just a freshman, Bell is already a 1,000-point scorer. But it's her all-around abilities that jump out most and has her coach, Tim Gleason, calling her a "Swiss army knife." Bell led her team in points, assists and steals and shows the potential for a bunch more growth. She is also an excellent shooter, nailing 46% of her field-goal tries.

School: Stewartville

Year: Sophomore

Position: Guard

2023-24 statistics: 16.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.6 steals.

Why she made the team: Shindelar is one of the most up-and-coming players in southeastern Minnesota. An excellent athlete with a sweet shooting touch, the 5-11 sophomore hit 47% of her field-goal tries this season, including 39% on 3-pointers. Shindelar has good size and length for a point guard and doesn't seem to rattle.

School: Goodhue

Year: Junior

Position: Forward

2023-24 statistics: 15 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals per game.

Why she made the team: Along with teammate Elisabeth Gadient, Lodermeier gave Goodhue a heck of a 1-2 punch en route to winning the Class 1A state championship. Lodermeier does lots of things well and among her best attributes is her superior strength. An avid weightlifter, that shows up in the way the All-State Lodermeier yanks down rebounds and muscles her way inside. She's also got a sweet shooting stroke from 3-point distance and has an ability to stay calm and poised.

School: Caledonia

Year: Junior

Position: Forward

2023-24 statistics: 18.5 points, 6.8 rebounds per game.

Why she made the team: Foster seems to operate best in big games. She can also score in droves, with games of 37, 35 and 31 points this season. A 5-11 junior with agility and strength, Foster was named honorable-mention All-State this season. The lefty can score inside and outside.

School: Lourdes

Year: Freshman

Position: Guard

2023-24 statistics: 11.2 points (37% on 3-pointers), 2.1 assists, 2 steals per game.

Why she made the team: Williams is one of the more up-and-coming point guards in the state. The freshman has the whole package — smooth, strong, fast, quick, smart and never overwhelmed. Williams finds her way out pressure defenses by herself with her elite ball handling. She can also shoot (37% from 3-point distance) and is a top-notch defender. Williams plays well beyond her years and helped lead Lourdes to the state tournament.

School: Lourdes

Year: Sophomore

Position: Forward

2023-24 statistics: 16.1 points, 8 rebounds per game.

Why she made the team: Hust has a combination of length (6-feet tall), speed, quickness, wiry strength and anticipation skills that makes her an exceptional defender, rebounder and scorer. The sophomore is difficult for offensive players to get past with her side-to-side quickness and strength. She's also relentless in chasing down rebounds and scores mostly inside with half hooks. Hust was named to the Class 2A All-State Tournament team.

School: Hayfield

Year: Senior

Position: Forward

2023-24 statistics: 17.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2.4 steals per game.

Why she made the team: For the third-straight year (along with senior point guard teammate Kristen Watson), Beaver was named to the Class 1A All-State team. The 5-11 Beaver is one of the top shooters in the area, having hit a rare 62% of her 2-pointers this season, 38% of her 3-pointers and 86% of her free throws. The versatile forward is also a top rebounder at 7.6 per game and Hayfield's all-time best in that category. She'll play next year at Luther College.

School: Byron

Year: Sophomore

Position: Guard

2023-24 statistics: 15.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.3 steals per game.

Why she made the team: Ohm was part of a two-headed star tandem for Byron, junior guard Kendra Harvey the other. A sophomore, the 5-10 Ohm took a big leap from a year ago with added strength and used it to become Byron's most consistent player on both ends of the floor. Ohm can score at all three levels, get to the hoop and is both tough and smooth.

School: Century

Year: Senior

Position: Guard

2023-24 statistics: 13 points, 5 assists, 3 steals per game.

Why she made the team: Clarey's numbers would have been even more robust had she not been dealing with an ankle injury virtually the entire season. She's due to have surgery on it soon. Despite the ankle pain, the 1,408-point career scorer still was plenty productive. Her biggest jump this season came in her assist numbers, as she handed out five per game. Quick, fast and a deep shooter, Clarey will play next year at Division II Lake Superior State University.
