McQuaid defense denies Hilton in final seconds: Section V's top games from Friday

For an unbeaten McQuaid team that has overwhelmed most of its opponents, coach Bobby Bates is pleased with how his Knights have responded in their one possession wins.

McQuaid proved to be resilient when it mattered once again, halting previously undefeated Hilton in the final seconds of a 24-21 win Friday night at LeBeau Field. Defenders Eoin Meyer, Nathan Earl and Owen Begemann each contributed to a sack that stalled a Hilton drive that entered the red zone with less than 30 seconds left.

The Knights (6-0) stopped Fairport's comeback attempt during a seven-point win in September. Outside of Week 3 and Week 6, McQuaid has beaten its other four opponents by 27 or more points. On Friday, John Harding scored two touchdowns. Meyer also scored, then joined players like Zach Couch, Nathan Earl and Aiden Jones' sturdy defensive unit that limited Hilton coach Rich Lipani's Cadets (5-1) from huge chunks of yardage on offense.

On Hilton's special teams, though, Robert Lowry's kick return touchdown pulled Hilton within 7-6 in the opening frame. Lowry's fourth quarter rushing score pulled the Cadets (5-1) within three. Colton Thorp threw a second quarter touchdown pass to Conner Bellanca, and the quarterback's connection with Luke Lockhart almost engineered a potential game-winning scoring drive.

"That was a gritty win," said Bates, who celebrated a birthday Friday. "That's a really good football team Hilton has. They run the ball, they can throw it, they play stout defense. ... We were able to do some things offensively early on, and the second half we were able to run the ball."

Attica/Alexander 42, Livonia 0

The Blue Devils (5-1) got back on the winning track behind Tyler Marino's two touchdowns.

Trent Woods scored on a 70-yard run and threw two more touchdowns in the air. Levi Pearl added a rushing touchdown.

Attica/Alexander, the reigning Section V Class C champion, fell to undefeated LeRoy last week, suffering its first loss of the season.

East High/World of Inquiry 27, Pittsford 17

The Eagles are still undefeated after winning at Pittsford Sutherland.

East High/World of Inquiry (6-0) is scoring with its passing game, including on a throw by senior quarterback Zymier Jackson against Class AA Pittsford, and on the ground.

Anthony Hampton was the leading Eagles ballcarrier against the Panthers (2-4), scoring two touchdowns. East/World of Inquiry entered the game No. 1 in the Section V Class A standings.

Aquinas 27, Penfield 0

Aquinas wins its third consecutive game, and according to coach Maurice Jackson, it is a loss that is fueling the streak.

"I was harping over the (6-0) loss to Pittsford, but that loss is the reason," Jackson said. "I was able to put on the film and point out the minor details.

"We were making mistakes that kept us out of the end zone. They were able to see the mistakes and see how we need to pay attention to detail."

Aquinas ballcarriers rushed for 209 yards, scoring three touchdowns against Penfield. Derrion Battle led the pack with two of those touchdowns while gaining 181 yards on 28 carries.

Battle scored in the first and second quarters. Aquinas freshman Trent Buttles used a quarterback sneak to get into the end zone during the third. Junior receiver/quarterback Alexis Rosado added a three-yard touchdown reception in the final quarter at Penfield (1-5).

Wayne 29, Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton 21

Wayne (4-1) is another team on a roll, stacking a fourth win in a row.

Michael Prentice helped seal the victory in Section V Class B by recovering a fumble forced by Alex Garrow at the Wayne 1-yard line with 1:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Garrow had a passing touchdown to Elliot Santos, a two-point conversion pass to Kahlen Clark and a rushing touchdown at the Cohocton Sports Complex.

Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton quarterback Nate Gardner had a hand in three touchdowns and 168 yards of his team's 234 yards of offense following his return from an injury.
