McDowell boys soccer changes coaches as regular season nears end. What we know about the move

The McDowell boys soccer team will finish 2023 with a new head coach.

Aaron Pentz was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season, replacing Jamie Smith, who is no longer with the program and did not attend McDowell's game Monday, a 1-1 draw against Cathedral Prep at Dollinger Field. McDowell athletic director Mark Becker confirmed the coaching change but declined to comment further when asked postgame about Smith's status.

Smith, who was hired in 2008, guided the Trojans to an 8-4 start this season. A request for comment from Smith was not returned.

Pentz, an assistant on staff under Smith, has been with the Trojans' program for more than a decade.

McDowell, 8-4-1 overall and second to Prep in Region 5 standings at 5-1-1, plays Wednesday at home against Corry. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at Gus Anderson Field. The Trojans have four games remaining in the regular season.
