Max Scherzer MLB trade speculation, odds for New York Mets include Arizona Diamondbacks

Could the Arizona Diamondbacks trade for New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer?
Could the Arizona Diamondbacks trade for New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer?

Max Scherzer trade speculation is picking up steam around the New York Mets and we couldn't help but notice one interesting team often in chatter as a potential landing spot for the ace.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, the team that drafted Scherzer in the first round of the 2006 MLB Draft and then famously (or infamously) traded him in 2009.

Could Scherzer waive his no-trade clause and end up back in Arizona?

Rumors continue to swirl around the struggling Mets potentially dealing the pitcher, with the first-place Diamondbacks, in need of rotation help, in the middle of a lot of the conversation.

Would Scherzer be a good fit back in the desert? Would the Diamondbacks be willing to pay his contract in an attempt to win a World Series?

Check out some Max Scherzer trade speculation involving the Diamondbacks.

Bookies.com: Diamondbacks second in odds to trade for Max Scherzer

The site lists the Texas Rangers at +500 (16.7% implied probability) to trade for the Mets pitcher, with the Diamondbacks second at +550 (15.4%). The Mets, at +175 (36.4%) are the favorites, according to that site.

Adam Thompson wrote: "The Reds, and the Arizona Diamondbacks, each have farm systems that rank in the top five. Arizona’s rotation ranks 22nd. Despite that, the D’backs lead the NL West over the Giants, Dodgers and Padres. Do they have enough pitching to finish the job? Adding a been-there, done-that veteran like Scherzer could help add an arm and build a mindset."

Fansided: Diamondbacks need to call Mets about Max Scherzer

Tim Boyle writes: "The Diamondbacks would be a good team for the Mets to become trade partners with because of their good mix of young prospects and controllable young position players. Younger arms such as Ryne Nelson, Tommy Henry, or Drey Jameson could be assets for the Mets. They wouldn’t be trading Scherzer to blow it all up. Dealing Scherzer is a reset button. The Diamondbacks could be a match for a few more of the possible Mets trade targets. Tommy Pham would be a solid pickup to join their outfield mix and maybe even take over a more regular role there and the DH spot. Adding Scherzer would feel like a little bit of history repeated the same way the Diamondbacks went out and added Curt Schilling. They didn’t win it all immediately but it turned out to be the right move. This staff's 4.66 ERA is 22nd in MLB."

CBS Sports: Diamondbacks among teams that could pursue trade for Max Scherzer

Matt Snyder writes: "Still, this is something worth monitoring. If the Mets have an awful July, Scherzer throws the ball really well and the starting pitching trade market doesn't really materialize, it's possible we'd see a team (Diamondbacks? Rangers? Astros? Padres???) get wild enough to pull the trigger."

Sportskeeda.com: Diamondbacks a top potential landing spot for Max Scherzer

Adrian Dorney writes: "Had anyone said, before the season that the Arizona Diamondbacks would be leading their division by the end of June, few would have believed them. However, with a record of 48-32, that's exactly where the team stands. Similarly to the Orioles, pitching has been the achilles heel of the D-Backs so far this season. Starter ERA is almost identical to Baltimore. The D-Backs might not have the budget to firm up Scherzer long-term, but if GM Mike Hazen moves a few things around, he might be able to nab Max Scherzer for the team's first postseason since 2017."

Audacy.com: Could Mets send Max Scherzer to Diamondbacks?

Ryan Gilbert writes: "The deciding factor for the Diamondbacks may be if they want to go all-in this season. The NL West was supposed to be one of the toughest divisions in baseball with the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants among the contenders. Those three teams are in contention, sure, but Arizona holds a 2.5-game lead over San Francisco through 80 games. If the Diamondbacks want to grasp that opportunity with a sense of urgency, trading for an ace like Scherzer could be a great move. They already have NL Cy Young Award candidate Zac Gallen and Scherzer would give them a terrific one-two punch for the playoffs."
