Matteo Trentin relcaims Tour of Britain lead ahead of stage six time trial
The battle for the green leader’s jersey at the OVO Energy Tour of Britain is set to move up a gear on Thursday, with the peloton due to tackle a 14-kilometre time trial in Worcestershire.
Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) reclaimed the lead of the race from Mathieu van der Poel (Corendin Circus) after Wednesday's fifth stage in the Wirral.
Trentin finished third behind stage winner Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma), taking back the lead thanks to the bonus seconds he picked up.
But with the Italian only leading by three seconds, the race against the clock, which starts and finishes in Pershore, may well see a further reshuffle. Team Ineos’s Ben Swift currently sits seventh overall at 22 seconds.
Groenewegen claimed his third stage win in the space of five days in Birkenhead on Wednesday, winning comfortably from British rider Matt Walls (GBR).
The Dutchman was given the perfect leadout by his team-mate Mike Teunissen and never looked remotely threatened.
Meanwhile, at the Vuelta a Espana, 23-year-old Cumbrian rider James Knox (Deceuninck-Quick Step) has risen to eighth overall following Wednesday’s 17th stage.
Knox’s team-mate Philippe Gilbert won the stage as Deceuninck-Quick Step made light work of crosswinds in Burgos, Gilbert catching Irishman Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) on the finish straight.
